Some shots of the Texan I flew this summer....

Here is the real thing from the NATG website:

And here’s my rendition (after attempting a sludge wash that turned into a smear wash):

beautiful on both counts.

You flew in a Texan? Very cool! and nice work on the Model too!! [:)]

Love it Mike, you ever get that sludgewash working for ya?? I’ve heard of a lot of people having troubles with it, but I haven’t tried it myself…

Not yet Heath…I think I’ll try using just watercolors from now on…

Jeeves, it looks great. Which yellow did you end up using? Which kit was that? I’d like to see more pictures, different angles of it. I’ve got the SNJ version in 1/72, but it’s a really poor testors kit.

Nice model and a great way to remember what must have been a thrill, flying in a Texan. Had a similar experience a few years ago and still recall it vividly. For the sludge wash technique, I think it works best if you just do small areas at a time and not let the sludge mix dry too much. First time I tried it (on a scrap model, fortunately) I tried to cover a large area, but ended up with some smudging and some areas where I really had to scrub to get the unwanted residue removed. Since then, I only work on an area no larger than a couple of square inches and only move on when satisfied with that area. Takes longer, but seems to avoid some of the problems.

Hey AJACKETSFAN…

I ended up using what I had… Insignia yellow…it doesn’t look like it matches the brochure pic-- but I used the pics I took while flying the Texan this summer as a guide and they are pretty close… I built the 1/48 scale Heller kit-- and as you can see, the canopy fit is terrible-- they seem to be too small to fit in the open view (although since I just build for myself, it didn’t bother me…well-- it did a little!)…in fact-- there was no way the canopy pieces fit if it was all closed either…so that was not great…and I ended up having to get True Details wheels to use as the kit hubs were mishapen…

Another slick build, Mike. Thanks for sharing it with us all.
