Anyone know of any good websites/resources that detail how to solder photoetch parts? I’m about to tackle the Aber Tiger I set on my Tamiya Tiger I, and think soldering might be the best way to go for metal-on-metal. Thanks!
hmm don’t know much about it, but would be interested myself!
Rory,
I don’t know of any sites, but use a 15W gun and micro-solder, some of the parts are too damn small to even solder. I used a combination ONCE (solder and CA) on a Panther Aber set, and I have never soldered again. Have fun buddy!
Steve
Here ya go!!!
Thank you for the info and website–I have a small soldering gun from Micro-Mark, but I’ve been too antsy about actually using it. Now, I think I’ve finally found the courage…
[:D]
Its not that bad , i used the same site as above it gave me the confidence to use the solder & iron. One thing i would advise is that you get a set of helping hands if you have,nt got a set. Also i found that when it comes to solider use the one without flux. You need flux to clean the joint, so get a low tin solider so it melts quicker & runs down the joint better. Also brush on flux. HOpe this helps you it did me when i started.[tup]
And good luck
Thanks…sounds like I need to pick up a few things at WalMart.
This gives me fond memories of the time I accidentally soldered my eyelids shut…
Now don’t do that…It’s all fun and games 'til somebody loses an eye!!![B)]
You saying about more to buy! I have just been to euro militaire spent toooooooooo much.[banghead][#oops]. Never mind its only once a year the rest of the year its bits & pieces.[:)]
Wow. I didn’t think it could be done. I used to be good at soldering circuits, maybe I should try one day with PE. But like Alan my budget was sliced yesterday. Oh, but I found a ICM’s Ural truck at a nice price.
Absolutley ,… I have done that exclusively for some time now.
I will do a detailed walkthru when I get My T-34 fenders kit in a week or so , and post it in here .
Until then let me give you a list of necessary tools and supplies ,…
Fine solder ,… I use .020 silver/tin solder avail. from radio shack , get fine diameter you will need it for small parts .
Plumbers flux , either the paste type or the liquid , both are good for this job .
Locking tweezers or better yet a set of "hackle pliers " used for fly tying , to hold parts while soldering
And of course a good soldering iron , resistance type is best ,but not necessary by any means , I have used a rgular one with a fine tip for quite some time now.
I have been meaning to do a soldering tutorial for a while now , as I am sure I was not the only one that had a hard time with large metal parts falling apart with CA cement .
The only way to go with fender assemblies I assure you .
here are some side skirts from my Tiger II done with solder
front fenders
spector822002 I think that would be a great idea[tup].
There are so many out there that are just getting in to using PE, also many just like me that just did not know how to soilder the parts together. Also there are those that have,nt got the confedence.
I learnt by reading on another site how to soilder, i an by no count an expert.
But if you have got somebody who is prepared to help & show them out therehow it is done it goes a long way.
So once again many thanks & think its are great idea[bow][tup]
I’ve tried soldering PE parts and can only say that I wish I’d have practiced on a less expensive set then the Aber 35K01 PE set! It certainly makes for stronger parts though.
I think a good tutorial in the techniques page would be an excellent idea for anyone wanting to try this method. Semper Fi, Mike
