Ok so I made a post in the ships forum for this subject as well, but I am hoping all you talented people out there might be able to help me. So last year a friend gave me a NIB 1/400 scale Revell USS Enterprise, and my fiance went onto Starfighter decals a couple of months later and bought me the decals for the airwing from 69. The problem I’m running into is trying to find 1/400 scale planes. I say a review on the web were a fellow modeler used 1/350 planes. My question is how much of a size difference is there between the two scales? And how much modification would I have to do to make them compatible? I really don’t want to waste the decal set my loving other half bought me especially after she spent almost $60 on the set.http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-55434581667841_2272_
The math is pretty simple. An F-4E Phantom, according to a source I found on the web, has a wingspan of 38’4". A 1/350-scale replica of it would have a wingspan of 1.314". A 1/400-scale model of it would have a wingspan of 1.15". The difference is .164" - or about 5/32".
Whether that’s significant or not is entirely up to the individual modeler.
Thanks for the info jtilley
Another way of looking at it is that there’s about a 15% dimensional difference on the scales.
You get into trouble because all three dimensional objects follow the law of cubes.
So 1.15 (the length of a 1/350 aircraft divided by the length of a 1/400 aircraft) times 1.15 (same math for width) times 1.15 (same math for height) gets you an overall volume increase of 1.52, or 50% larger in bulk. To me that’s a really big deal.
You’ll find those a/c. I gave you the name of L’Arsenal which has a lot of 1/400 stuff, but there are other sources too.

You are correct about L’Arsenal. I went on their site and I found some that will work for my current project and a huge selection of stuff for my Task Force Replenishment at Sea project. One of our fellow modelers here on the forums reached out to me and has a bunch of the planes that I need and we made arrangements. I’m still on the search for some A-6’s,A-3’s and A-7’s. I"m not going to give up the search, I may just have to take a little longer on this build and continue on with my others. I appreciate all the advice and help from everyone.
Souda, do you want me to convert the f8 crusaders to a7 corsairs as I do have the drawings for both?
ddp59, I actually looked through some of my college stuff and I fond my set of drawing that my engineering teacher gave me. I don’t know how or were he got them but they are the actual drawings from Vought themselves. Thank you for the offer, to be honest I was shocked as hell the other day when I found them on for the fact that I still had them and two because they are actually from Vought.
