Hey guys, I was wondering if any could share their knowledge of Sioux clothing with me.
I am working on a project, not gona really talk about it untill I know I can actually do it.
I am looking specificly for every day clothing as well as what would be worn into combat.
I tried google but I dont really trust the results as much as I do yous guys.
Make a trip to the library. There are any number of books on the Plains Indians.

Animal Skins…
I know they used skins and hides, but like…
Animal hides can mean anything from vikings wearing giant hunks of fur, to a leather jacket. Everything I have seen looking online seems like linen types of shirts with fringes. Where they linen, animal hide?
Keep looking. I’m sure the presence or absence of linen shirts would involve reservation life. How are intending to portray your Sioux? On the reservation or off of it?

Im doing something… different but I want to get info on the origins before attempting.
I really like games that do alternative history and I always enjoy speculating on what ifs when it comes to history.
Recently a game sparked an idea, what would have happened if A the American revolution didn’t happen/was lost and the colonies stayed so, or the Indian wars were lost. Either way its a what if scenario to the point of what if the Sioux (since there my favorite for some reason) weren’t defeated and developed to a more or less modern society in the 40s and were drawn into the war. Seems to me, from looking at how their society worked that they would have been a good candidate for the kommitern
Since I am bascly going to get a body that has the general pose I want, sand all the detail off, and sculpt new detail on it I want to have a good sense of their sense of style, to put it that way, to try and see how it could be developed into wwii era combat uniform.
I have a few thoughts on how to do this, non front opening uniform shirts, the use of fringes on the shirt sleeves, featheres on weapons and bags, war paint.
I just want to try and make it look realistic. I plan on having him killing and or scalping whats left of an ambushed german MG team.
I am going to attempt to scratch the majority of the things for the sioux warrior, I am already almost done the rifle.
Remember, ‘Sioux’ is kind of a misnomer, the tribes were actually known as ‘Lakota’ and ‘Dakota’. You may have better luck with your online, and library searches using those terms. Additionally, pretty much any Plains Indian clothing will probably work as an example, the only big differences would be in the decoration. Good luck!

what I really need to know is the clothing differences between the sioux and other tribes. I know they all wore hides for clothes, head dresses, and such, but like… Would you see a lakota warrior with a wolf head dress for example?
Apparently not. I thumbed through four of five pages of images in Google for Lakota and Dakota and did not see one.
Osprey’s “Tribes of the Sioux Nation” depicts a contemporary dancer wearing a wolf headdress. None of my othe Plains Indian books show this.
It’s a pretty big assumption that the Plains Indians would not have adopted modern clothing and adapted to the changing culture they were seeing around them for so many years. Even historuically, all the nations adopted various trade items, from cooking utensils and weapons to glass beads and trade cloth to the very horse culture for which many of them became famous.
Oh, I know, I know that very well, but all nations equipment, architecture, food, everything reflects their culture their roots, etc etc.
I would think a culture that had warrior societies and said warriors were held in high regard would not loose all of that history. That is why I want to know what they actually wore so I can attempt to evolve it by using other nations as a guide.
Atleast in my way of thinking someone who decended from those warriors would want to show it if they were in the armed forces, and since there was not really any body armor I figgure it would make sense for those warriors to keep some of that herritage, wearing a war bonnet, or those bone chest protectors (dunno what there called) into battle.
