some suggest, the best way to simulate water was coat of clear varnish, but varnish prove very corodesive ,(specially on foam),alternative will be siliconized (clear) chaulk, unfortunately, it do not possess the kind luster similiar to varnish.but how-to-do-book stated it cleary, siliconized chaulk provide best solution.
Correct me,is there different kind of siliconized chaulk?
This is from a post I made the other day about groundwork. If this is the kind of water you need, celluclay might work for you as well. If you want clear deep water you may have to go with clear casting resin but be mindful of your base, resins don’t always work well with all types of base materials.
I agree, celluclay is good for just about any groundwork, even makes great water!
actually, i come across article from How to Build Dioramas by Sheperd Paine, page 87,show how he use silicone caulk to simulate ocean ,I make a mistake of using silicone caulk clear,I rule out resin, since it is very hard to work with.like varnish highly corrodeship when you got styrofoam as support.
this is first time I actually use silicone caulk, with a negative result.what type of silicone caulk should I use?
Woodland Scenics makes water and some stuff called “Water Effects” that works good for making ripples and small waves. They also have a ‘How-To’ on their web site.
The best water i have seen so far is made from fine plaster, make a boader out of wood then get a peice of tin foil that you would use for lunch’s scrunch it up then lay it out flat then put your a peace of balsa wood that is the same shape as the boat hull where you want your ship to be. then place your wood frame on top of the foil and pour your fine plaster into that let sit to dry peal of the foil and remove the frame turn over and remove the balsa. undercoat plaster for the wake just use daf modelers clay and use your finger tips lightly squeesing the clay to a pointthen push the clay over to abit to simulate water waves from the wake. for the back of the ship use modelers putty and a couple of tooth picks and dabe the putty all over then use a soft brush just to lightly go over that. coat again with undercoat us oil colours to paint the board remembering to high light the areas with white dry brushing to bring out the tips of the waves and wake as well as the foam area of the rear of the ship. sorry this is not to good with detail as im at work and had short time to write this ill take photos of each step and do a write up of each step later on. hope that helps you out.
Woodland scenics “realistic water”. It’s water based, won’t attack foam, works great for all sorts of things. Ive used for recreating lenses over gauges, and for creating water. If you can find it liquitex works great as well. Check the model railroad section at your LHS. Head to the local library and look at books on modeling scenary for model railroads. I’ve used the realistic water, combined withmodpodge for the ripples. It works great. Of course this is mostly for deep water or water at the base of a waterfall or something. Add silicon caulking to the mix and you can create turbulant ocean as well, with white paint on the tops and the dark blue underlying the whole thing.
