I just want an answer to this question I posted on the “Ships” board. I am a tried and true aircraft guy and will never change. However, I love the Pacific war history and you gotta have a platform for those SBDs or Doolittle. So, I was awarded the Hornet from Trumpeter from my lovely wife for my recent birthday. As I was with aircraft a year ago, I am now with this ship. I am ignorant and the things I am finding on the web are not answering some questions. So, where do I go? Here, the best message board around and here meaning specifically “aircraft” where everyone is so helpful. So, here is my post and anyone that has done this Hornet or another, please help me. In 5 days, I have had 10 readers and no responses. There will be 10 readers in an hr on this page. You guys and gals are the best!!! Thanks in advance. Granted though, I proposed a group build and got left in the dust. That was my fault, I guess. I blinked and you guys were already doin a wash on the Corsair cockpit.
Here’s my question in its unadulterated form.
Building the Trumoeter Hornet. What color was the deck below the flight deck? I know the flight deck was wood and was painted over a blue or a grey, but what was the next deck down, is it the hangar deck? I am unfamiliar with the names. It does not appear wood by the texture of the model.
Sorry can not really help you… I’d have thought the deck under the flight deck to be metallic. The walls probably light grey while the floor painted in a darker colour (light grey would show dirt too much), but I’m no expert and I may be totally wrong…
The hanger deck floor is usually a no skid type surface. The walls are a light grey. If you get a chance, at military park in Charleston, SC they have the USS. Yorktown. It has the late version angled flight deck but otherwise everything is original. They also have most all the WWII a/c in the hangar deck. Cool site. 1 sub, 1 tin can, the Yorktown, a cutter and a vietnam mock up. I will dig out my pics of the Yorktown and see if I can get’em posted for ya.
On that page, there’s a pic showing the deck you’re talking about. The floor is painted in a medium-greyish tone, rather glossy. The walls do appear very light. That site probably has more pics where the details of the floor and walls can be seen… Of course, it’s a ship that quite different from the Hornet, but it’s something!
Hmmm…good advice, of course, but don’t ya’ll reckon the colors on those two floating museums might be quite different than a WWII era Hornet?
I’m just guessing, of course! I have no idea, really. Just seems kinda doubtful it’d be the same.
I’m sorry you didn’t get a response on the “ships” board for your question. Being the “aircraft guy” that you are you realize that aircraft are by far the most popular modelling subject and this board gets more traffic by default. However the implication that aircraft builders are more helpful than us shipbuilders is unfair. Since I’ve started participating in this site and others I have tried to help as many people as I can including aircraft builders in this forum. See my Mig-29 post. I love to do research and sometimes I research my way right out of building a model. So after reading your complaint I have decided to branch out a little and see if I can help people who are obviously getting no help in answering their question. I thought about it and I’m wondering if you are more upset about not getting the information that you needed or the fact that nobody bothered to respond to your inquiry, even if it had just been to say "Hey, I looked but I can’t find the info that you are looking for.
I’ve always gotten good responses when I’ve posted in the Ships forum. Same friendly atmosphere as in all the FSM forums!
Perhaps nsclcctl’s post was just there during a slow week…or a fast week, and maybe it got pushed back to page 2 before everyone had a good look at it.
I’m pretty sure if anyone had something to offer and they saw the post, they’d be more than willing to respond.
