What recommedations do y’all have for a silver pencil for weathering? I picked up a silver-ish pencil from Hobby Lobby that is made by Prismacolor… but it just don’t look right. it doesn’t show up very well and looks kinda “thich”.
I wondered if maybe it’s the wrong type of pencil to achive the effects I’ve seen with a pencil.
that’s the right kind, sharpen it good and “tap” it on the wings like a drum stick,it takes a little practice but works well,be careful if it looks to light,it can be overdone when exposed to different lights
on the access panels,go around them with a shakey movement in different directions
When you said “tap it on the wings like a drum stick”, I’m picturing you sitting at the table with a bucket of KFC, madly slapping away at a plane’s wing with some Extra Crispy… ROTFL
I use the silver ball point type pen as mentioned above as well,it works for larger scratches and rubbing type wear, make a few dots with it and then take a slightly damped (just lick it) Q-tip and streak it in the direction that you want (on Bf-109 i use it on the seat back and rub it downwards to simulate the pilot getting in and out
Jon,the KFC drumstick also works well if you paint the area silver first
Of course if there is too much grease after using the KFC weathering method, just use the biscuit to get rid of the excess grease. However, this sometimes removes some of the nicely weathered panel lines. No worry. Just moosh the gravy into those panel lines for great effect! Wow, a whole new use for KFC! [xx(]
I tend to shy away from straight silver, as I find it a bit too stark for my tastes, so I cut Testors silver with a small amount of burnt umber oil paint to tone it down. Makes for a nice subtle worn metal effect.
I rub the silver pencil on the edges of things like cockpit seat, a instrument panel, aircraft guages with raised bezels. Same idea as dry brushing, but with a lot more control. I use the silver pens for larger areas of wear.
