When using silly putty for masking prior to painting, is the silly putty reuseable or do you need to use new for each project?
Thanks,

It is reusable. Although paint from old projects will embed in the putty and discolor it.
Stik is correct in thaat it is indeed reusable. To a point that is. After a while you can have so much old paint left in it that it will imbed into the paint job on your model. Yes, this is the voice of experience.
Good thing that it is pretty inexpensive and easily found… [;)]
Really? I find the stuff for $ 6- $7 at TRU.
Got mine at Big Lots… the former Pick N Save… [whstl]
Just because I can, I’m going to suggest a product that costs five times what Silly Putty does:
It’s called “Panzer Putty”. It’s a dilatant silicon, which means it’s a cross between Silly Putty and that cornstarch and water goo you made in third grade science class. Looks pretty interesting.
I have seen that product in a couple websites but was curious about it. now that I have seen the link, not sure if it’s all worth the $3 for the product. I’ll stick with poster tack or Silly Putty instead. LOL!
And it doesn’t have the potential to destroy a model like silly putty does. Ask me how I know. Never mind, don’t. No one ever belives me anyway.
Yeah, I’m not sure about it myself, but I’m looking into it for my Waffentrager build.
No, please tell.[:-*]
I had it basically chemically bond to the surface of my model. And yeah, I know next comes the “you didn’t do it right” stuff. Maybe, but blue tack isn’t much more $ and I’ve never had a problem, but the Panzer stuff is even better and a worthy investment.
Yes, I’m considering shelling out for some Panzer Putty.
Well that sucks. Was the surface that the Silly Putty bonded with painted? If so, what brand of paint/type of paint? Also, how long was the Putty in place to form that bond? I do presume you used the name brand Silly Putty and not some knock off… A guy I know used knock off stuff and had problems.
I am asking all this just to get a better idea of what happened in your case so thawe any of us who use the stuff can avoid that problem.
Hey Stik, I was one of those guys:-( You must have “Real” Silly Putty!! The dollar store one doesnt work.
