If you have a well organized workbench, please post pictures. I am always looking for better ways to organize my bench. Right now my biggest issue is lack of drawers, so I store a lot of stuff right on top of my bench, which is supposed to be my work area. Second problem is that I stored a lot of paint right in front of my bench on the wall. I need to move my paint storage area to somewhere else and just have a small area for the paint I need for the current project I am working on.
Thanks on the shelves. Other then the dust and 55gal drum of Windex to clean them they are great. Bought them from a store going out of business. One day I’ll build a cabinet around them
LOL…I imagine it would be painful having to remove all of your builds, and then clean all those shelves. When you do have the time to build the cabinet I hope you post a completed photo.
When I finished off my basement, I did a “built in” work bench. Made a couple small shelves in the corners, build in rack for those little Testors paints, drille holes in the sides of said rack for holding brushes and tools. Drawers (in the shadow to the right, unseen)are from my old build desk (desk top went out to the garage for a butcher block). Needs have evolved a bit, since I built it almost 15 years ago, and there’s a few things I’d do a little different, but it still works well. One thing I wouldn’t change…having a large glass work surface!
Here’s my hodge-podge of a “work bench”. I have been looking at flea markets for stuff for a smaller set up so I can put a squat rack/bench in the “cave”. That is actually a nice old table underneath the paint and glue spots.
Great thread. Love to see how everyone else sets up shop. This is my workbench. It’s mobile so I can get around . The tools and paints are stored in cabinets around the workshop.
Nice set-up…don’t you have shelving on the other three walls displaying your builds? You have a nice modeling room.
Patrick,
No need to hang your head in shame sir. Those photos are from when I first started…now half the grid lines on my cutting mat are gone from spilling thinner on it. I have paint stains on the bench…Use it like you stole it LOL. And thank you for your comment.
My workbenched has changed a little since these pictures have been taken. I added another table just for my computer. However, this is the most organized it’s been.
As far as storage is concerned, a couple of years ago, I picked up a Rubbermaid or Sterlite 3-drawer cabinet on casters, which I have stowed under the bench:
I store most of my paints in two of the drawers, and putties and some tools in the third. I originally stored paints in the wooden toolbox you see in the one shot, and the rest were just on the bench. But they got in the way there. Also, I wanted to be able to take my paints with me, when we have a modelers’ meetup, for example. I thought about getting a large tacklebox, but I wound up getting the cabinet instead. It’s still portable enough for me to take along on the road; it fits on a seat in my truck.
I have lumber cut to add a hutch to the back of the bench. It will consist of two shelves, and I’ll be able to organize the bins of figure kits and other supplies, that are currently on the floor under the bench. I just have to knock the parts together one of these Saturdays.
Here’s what the bench looked like back in 2009, by the way:
Not much has changed, except that things are piling up, heh. And some of the toy soldiers not finished back then, still aren’t finished today. But it’s a hobby, not a job!
