Have you ever heard the story of the australian sunderland that was attacked by 8 Ju88’s? It shot three down damaged another 3 so they never flew again and drove the other two away for the loss of one crewmember? well i plan to model it the only problem is that i dont have reference material for the cockpit and bomb bay. I know i can get a PEF’s from white ensign models but to bring them to australia will cost about $70 after currency exchange so scratch build it is.
Any links to photos or other info would be greatly appreciated
oh and detail of the galley. n461 was the first sunderland to be retrofitted with a single 303 machine gun in the galley window hatches so detailing this area will be necessary once the hatches are opened up.
Hey man I’m in the same boat as you looking for detail fo the sunderland, there was a book done by warpaint which had a big sheet of 1/72 detail drawins but I think it went of production!
By the way what kit are you using?
Here’s a limited walkaround of the Hendon Sunderland. To be honest the photographer made the best of it because you can’t get everywhere in the aircraft: I think it shows a beam machine gun station, but without the gun installed. http://aircraftwalkaround.hobbyvista.com/sunder/sunder.htm
More pics of the same aircraft are on: http://www.seawings.co.uk/
Look under references, then Sunderland. Great website for flying boat lovers by the way!
If you look underreferences, manuals, you’ll find lots of period pics/drawings from the Sunderland manual, including this pic:
I hope this is enough info for you guys. I’d love to see progress pics of your models!
i looked at the walkaround. the links are broken so you cant see larger pictures.
i dont think they are the galley guns. They appear to be aft the bomb bay. this i think, would amke them the beam gun station of the sunderland that did not have a dorsal turret. The galley guns are located beneath the wing in a hatch wich is also the seond last porthole on each side.
From what I understand, the White Ensign fret would be well worth the money, being incredibly comprehensive. It might be worthwhile saving up for it, or looking out for any build articles that use it, so you can fabricate a reasonable facsimile from any photos of the build?
I think there is a couple of other kits in resin or somthing maybe I’m mistaken, any way whta are you doing about the raised detail? are you going to rescribe?as for myself I am probably going to scratch build all the detail because it makes building more fun!
not really sure on the raised detail. i was thinking i might spray a rust colour under themain colour and lightly sand the rivet heads to bring out the rivets. my particular aircraft was pretty weathered, actually the only photo i have of it, the aircraft looks down right filthy!. Either that or i just sand it off. I will have to scribe some serious panel lines in though i think… I have looked at the options, white ensign model is the way to go i think, but i will still need to scratch build the galley and do something about those awful rotten turrets though!
