ship's wooden deck

any hints on painting a deck with a realistis wooded finish. Thanks in advance[prte]

Yes. And it depends on the scale. Start with a good light overall base color. Gull Gray is a good warm gray, other choices could be Tamiya(?) Deck Tan, or MM Radome tan.

Grab all of the tans you have and put a little of each on a palette or piece of glass, along with a bunch of your base color.

Take a fine brush and grab something to use as a short straightedge, like a little wood block.

Starting at the far edge, make uniform little board length dashes of a mix of base and tan. Far apart from each other.

Do it again and again with three or four colors.

Thinned paint is best, I like acrylics for this kind of thing so spit gets involved.

If you decide it got a little too crazy, hit it with a thinned over coat of the base color.

Go to youtube there are several videos on doing decks. I use a method by Guido Hopp. Its a lot of work but I like the results. I prefer to paint the decks than use a wood deck product. I found them to thick and hard to work with.

I use a very thin grey wash if I am intending to show weathered, unpainted deck.

Any suggestions for real wood decks? I know Acrylics will warp’em. Are different techniques required? Is it worth trying to weather them or is pristine the way to go?
I have a few Revell 1/570 kits and I got some wood decks from FreeTime. Thanks.

Nino.

I paint or stain mine after they are glued to the plastic deck. I think that makes them a bit more resistant to warping.

Vallejo Paints have a set of paints for painting different wood effects. It is terrific! I have used this set several times when painting ship decks.

Thanks Don, Thank Bill.

Thanks for the suggestion to stain once stuck in place. I had been leaning on stain/paint first then apply the deck so that I don’t mess up anything I already painted on the model.

I will put Vallejo Paints on my shopping list as I have read many positive Posts about them.

Jim.

I applied the wood overlay to the deck and stained it before I put it on the model.
