I picked up Academy’s new Sherman with the wood plank armor and I had a question. One of the paint options is a two tone OD and sand color. The direction shows the wood painted that way too. Was this correct or was the wood added after(and therefore a natural wood color)? The reason I ask is the paint guide for the plain OD version says to paint the wood OD, same as the hull, but the box art and pics clearly show it a natural wood color. Also, was the wood armor similiar to zimmerit in that it was protection against magnetic armor or is it for another reason? Thanks
I have found only one photo so far and it looks like was added then painted. It was used like zimmer to thaw magnetic mines.
Thanks. Saves trying to replicated weathered wood!
Most of the wood plank Shermans that I have seen were on the Pacific front against the Japaness. They were painted Olive Drab at the begining but the paint due to the salt water and condictions started to fade. This allowed the wood to show through and you know what happens to wood when exposed to water. It swells and get a rought texture to it.Also I have a book were it shows a Sherman were they used wood planks mounted to the sides for and application of 2-4 inches of cement for added armor. That was done in Europe. That tank had a hard time moving and was later removed according to what I have read.Digger
So basically with the two tone scheme, the same would apply- wood showing through for a heavily weathered tank or not for a newer paintjob
there were also shermans with wood planking across the suspention to stop suicide bombers jumping in there
heres a photo of one
Would it be safe to assume that any Sherman with a wading trunk would probably not have any stowage? I wasn’t sure if those trunks were removed after going ashore.
the trunks on the D Day Shermans had explosise devices on the wading and covers for the barrel, i shoild think it would be the same for the PTO Shermans
i dont think the crew would have anything on the outside that would help any suicide troops to get onto there sherman
ive got a book on them, but im going to have to do alot of digging to get to it, but ill have a look for any photos with any gear on the out side
