Sherman tank ref. books

Sherman freak,
Could you or anyone give me names of some go reference books for the Sherman tank. I just purchased M4 New Vanguard book by Osprey.

Best one will cost you about $150+. It is called Sherman by RP Hunnicutt, long out of print and considered the “Bible” for Sherman enthusiasts.

For us ordinary humans, there are several decent ones. My favorite is called M4 Sherman by George Forty. He also does one called US Tanks of WW2 which covers the various tanks we used.

For model building, there is the MMiR Modelers Guide to the Sherman by Ampersand Publishing. Another OOP book that is well worth the search and covers the various Sherman kits in various scales, although 1/35 is its main focus.

Osprey Modelling Manuals 14 M4 Sherman is another decent volume that is still easily found.

Squadron Signal also does the M4 Sherman in Action and an excellent M4 Sherman Walkaround that is well worth the price ($8 and $14 respecitvely).

Mark,

So far I have two books that cover the Sherman: “Marine Tank Battles in the Pacific” by Oscar E. Gilbert and Osprey’s “Scale Armor - Modeling the M4 Sherman and the PzKpfw VI Tiger Tanks”. Of the two I would have to recommend the Osprey book. The book by Oscar Gilbert is a great book and I would recommend it if you’re looking for the history of Marine armor in the Pacific, but the photos are dark and don’t show a lot of the detail I was looking for.

The Sherman I’ve started will be a tank from the Marine 4th Tank Batallion that was destroyed on Iwo Jima. I have video of the tank taken from a History Channel program, but I’m still looking for more information on the 4th Batallion tanks specifically.

Hope this helped a little,

Rick

All of the above mentioned books are excellent resources Mark. I do highly recommend the Hunnicut book and the Sherman Walk-Around, both are very informative. Most of my resources come from scratching up odds and ends through the years. The net has become a very valuable source.

Thank you. I hope to find some of the above mentioned books

i have Sherman Firefly by Mark Hayworth
three Concord books on the Sherman and the walk around sherman mentioned earlyer + all the old Model Magazines on the subject

I have a book called “Modeler’s Guide to the Sherman” that i’ve had for awhile I like it because it breaks down the Sherman to help you identify what type of M4 you have. In the back it has a resource list that covers all the Sherman kits and aftermarket parts ever made. Keeping in mind this books copyright is 1999 so it is not current.

I agree with all of the above. I like Hunnicutt’s the best for specific info and the photo books for a lot of nice shots. I also go to museums and military vehicle shows and photo a lot of interiors and exteriors.
Another excellent source are TM’s. (Technical Manuals) on the Sherman. Originals are EXPENSIVE and can be found occasionally on ebay and at vehicle shows. However, there are several publishers of reprints such as Portrayal Press www.portrayal.com I believe as well as a fellow named Stan Poole in New Mexico… dunno if he’s still in the business though.

Forgot the mention Chamberlain & Ellis, who had some good reference books on Shermans a few years ago. Most are OOP but can be had at used book stores every now and then.
