Shading on white

Now i know modern aircraft are kept spick and span, but what is a good way to shade the white gear bays without being overpowering?

The major contaminant is likely oil or hydraulic fluids. I use a wash of Burnt Sienna or Burnt Umber oil paint thinned heavily with mineral spirits. It will pop out detail & give the bays a used look without totally obscuring the white.

Regards, Rick

I use a wash thinned Tamiya smoke to to pop out the details.

Do you just kinda smear it all around on the low spots or what? Forgive my ignorance, but this is my 1st really serious model and I want it to look its finest! Thanks guys!

First of all Clear coat the bays with future or gloss clear lacure. Then with your highly thined wash touch the bursh to ther areas that you would like to highlighted. The usual prosedure is to later remove the excess wash after it has dried, but since your dealing with such a small area it would be better to be more prisice about were you put the wash. The wash will tend to run into all the nooks and cranneys on its own. If I were you I would use a Pastel, Soap and Water wash. Any mistakes and you simply wash it away with warm water.

Take it easy. Trevor M.
