does anyone know if satin black is the same as semigloss black, because my car seats recommend satin black and all I have is semigloss black, But from a picture I have of the real 70 Buick GSX it looks more grayish leather, How would I go about the painting the seats- thank you.
Satin finish does not have as much shine as semi gloss does. Satin finish, depending on the lighting/viewing angle can appear very close to matte at times. Semi gloss will not, it will have a more reflective sheen.
thank you for the information and telling me the difference between the two , now I need to ask you who sells satin black black paint for models does modelmaster have satin black paint I have semi-gloss paint
Tamiya makes a matte black and a semi gloss black in their spray lacquers, also look at NATO Black as it’s a very dark gray-available in both spray and acrylic. They are very forgiving paints. If you’re looking in the Model Masters enamel range, look at Cockpit black as it’s also a very dark gray bordering on black, it’s not available in a spray can so you’ll have to brush it or use an airbrush. If you’re going to be doing a lot of black interiors, I’d suggest going to the local hardware store or auto parts place and looking at their spray can selection and trying a few to see which ones are close. You’ll get many times the amount paint for about the same cost. The same goes for engines and headers as well (a can of header white will probably last a lifetime). As a bonus, you can use the semi-gloss as a frame paint as well on most cars.
EDIT:You can always use the old modelers trick of painting the part either gloss or flat black then rubbing it with your finger. The oils in your skin will either impart a slight sheen or flat depending on the paint used. Also remember all shades of black aren’t the same so use different paints to simulate the different surfaces in the interior.
Ok thanks I have a cockpit black willtry it
Humbrol makes an excellent Satin Black, #85 I think. When airbrushed it is far more of a powdered satin finish like you see on new cars. Just stir it very thoroughly before using.
Ronald,
The cockpit black will probably dry to a flat finish. You’ll probably have to coat it with something to get a vinyl or leather luster. If you have some Future floor wax around, you can use some Tamiya flat base to flatten it. You’d have to experiment to find the right mix. Or you can play with Testors gloss and flat clear for the same effect.
thank you all for your input and information you’ll been very helpfull
Mix some flat black with the semi gloss to bring the gloss down. Start with 1:1 and keep going til you get the look you want.
Thats the similar to method I have used for yrs. I painted this Chassis using MM Enamels Flat Black and Gloss Black mixed to get the Semi Chassis color.
Yep. That works for me. I make my own.
