Second Question on the HMMWV....

Hey all,
Since I recieved great help from my last post, I was wondering if anybody as any info on the “in field mod” for a motorbike rack.
The rack is set up in the back of the Hummer and was basically a quick build(as you could say). There was really no standard to how these were built since they were field applied like was mentioned above.
My real question w/ doing the research is that I see that mainly of the Cav and recon units utilized these types of bikes. By chance could the MPs haved used these as well?? Thats what my main focus was on but if not I can lean towards one of the units above!!
Thanks again for all you assistance[:)]

I was at Ft. Knox in 1991, around the time the dirt bike/HMMWV concept was being tried. There was a simple bike rack made of angle iron attached to the tailgate of the M1025. It wasn’t a field mod since the DOL workers at Knox did the construction.

The MPs didn’t try this, that I’m aware of any way. Scouts and MPS have different missions even though they share some of the same equipment. An MP on a motorcycle is OK for garrison or training area traffic enforcement (yes they do watch for speeders on the various tank trails and range roads in training areas), but an MP on a motorcycle is rather useless for his primary mission of route security in a combat envrionment.

now thats a conversion a Mountin Bilke rack for the Hummer[8D]
or a Ski rack

Hey Rob,
Well I guess I can live with a recon unit then…!!! Na at any rate it’ll be a fine choice!![;)]
Thanks again.

Capt Cave,
It looks pretty cool. If I can get some pix I’ll post em for ya.

No the Rangers don’t have LAnd Rovers with dirt bike racks. They have FAVS or FAST ATTACK VEHICLES. Kinda like Dune buggies. The Bikes were usually transported by 5 ton vehicles. At least that is how it was at 2nd Battalion.

so the Ranger DO have Land Rovers and they DO have dirt bikes

so your saying not together and not the 2nd Battalion
ive never seen Rangers with Chenowths

Hey Ranger,
The Verlinden book and the Concord book on the Hummer has a few pix of a motorbike attachment.
Especially the Verliben book, they give ya an up close look at the set up. Sorry dont know the pages off hand[:(] They also have a pix of one that was used during the Gulf War. I think it was the 1st Sqd, 1st Cav unit if I’m not mistaken.
I figure i’ll either go w/ a Recon or Cav unit HMMWV!!
