SdKfz 7

does anyone happen to know if the SdKfz 7 could pull/tow a ferdinand

I am not 100% sure, but my guess would be that a SdKfz 7 would only tow a Ferdinand downhill, shortly before the Ferdinand flattened it if the brakes weren’t used.

SdKfz 7 - 11 tons and 140hp

Ferdinand - 65 tons and 600hp

Ferdinands were basically too heavy to tow, hence most were destroyed by their crews after being damaged and rendered immobile on the battlefield. Another Ferdinand could just about tow one, but it put a great strain on the engines, which struggled at the best of times.

LOL

Great one!

Exactly what I thought.

Absolutely not.

Ok, I’ll quit.

Thanks for editing that one, Cowboy.[;)]

It can be hard to tell how unlikely something like that would be when you have only the most basic knowledge (picture and name) of vehicles and their capabilities. When you look at most recovery vehicles, you’ll note that they are generally as large or larger than the vehicles they tow and extract. A tow truck is bigger than a civic for the same reason. This is the problem with extremely heavy vehicles.

Just to put it all in perspective, it would take no less than 6 SdKfz 7s to recover an Elefant. It took a minimum of 3 SdKfz 9 FAMOs (@ 270HP each) to do the job, 5 if the going was really rough as this photo from The Combat History of sPzJgAbt 653 shows;

Oh I see thanks for the information and picture

TL: one of the greatest things that will help your modelling and research is to get up close and see some real tanks. In modelling, it’s easy to lose perspective that these little plastic models represent 60 ton tanks. If you get a chance, see if you can get to a museum, or military vehicle park of some sort. Maybe an old tank outside a veteran’s hall. It gives you a good perspective that these were HUGE lumbering beasts, and terrifying to face on the battlefield.

HTH, RC

Now that’d be an expensive dio in 1/35[:O]

Great pic Kykeon[tup]

Getting wild ideas Glyn? Great pic!!!

T26E4: Actually over the summer I got to go to Aberdean Proving Ground and I saw allot of tanks there but I didnt see the King Tiger from the Battle of the Bulge the one that was captured
