I am thinking about getting hold of Trumpeters Sd.Kfz. 7, the 8 ton towing vehicle and troop transporter.
It comes with a detailed engine and gearbox and I am struggeling to understand how these would have painted to avoid rust.
The undercarriage as such looks well detailed and I am sure that there is more stuff under the platform that never was painted German Grey or Dark Yellow, the engine driven towing cable for example…
Anyone out there who can offer some advice please?
I guess this would be the same colour that is used in the Engine comportant and lower part of the Fihting and Driving compartment in the Panzers as well?
The only pictures I have seen depict scale model engines and they are usually painted steel or silver but I believe more in the gray-green.
While I agree that restored vehicles are not always the best reference, if you look at this photo, you can see the grey-green paint on the oil pan and lower engine block;
Grey-green was commonly used for engine, tranny and other major components, through the middle of the war. I can’t remember the cut-off date off the top of my head, but even after the date, stock-piled parts were still being delivered to the assembly plants painted in grey-green.
