When I got started in modeling, it was before plastic, so scale model kits (non-flying, static scale) were blocks of balsa wood, sometimes sawn to profile view, and the plans gave you cross section drawings to cut out and make templates for the carving. I still scratch one now and then for subjects I can’t find a kit for. I find carving wood a real stress reliever. One of those things where your hands and nervous system just take over and your thoughts wander onto whatever, while your hands continue to carve .
I know exactly what you mean Don!..working with wood is very therapeutic!.. model making has changed beyond recognition today!I have a distaste for aftermarket stuff that one can buy for the model your making…completely taking away your imagination for having a go at actually making the part yourself!..all to do with making money of course! I have and do make the occasional kit but nothing is more satisfying than to scratch build your own model
Actually, I use a lot of aftermarket stuff on my scratchbuilds. I hate vacuforming canopies, and things like props and wheels are just to hard to do to be worth it.
