Looking for information on where to find metal or plastic tubing that I could use in order to build missile bodies and nosecones. I’m attempting to build a couple of Boeing’s latest missiles for a display at work and have all of the reference materials need, but have not found any tubing large enough for a display. I don’t have any specific scale in mind, but would like to find something around an inch in diameter. Any clues???
Have you tried the hardware store ? Those plastic tubing that are used to run electric wiring come in all kinds of diameters.
Scott,
What missiles are you trying to model? Just curious. I would like to find/make a 1/350 scale polaris and posideon missile.

You could use some “recycled” plastic as well. I am currently using prescription bottles, shaving cream lids and other odds and sods for an armour scratchbuilding project.
Cheers;

Have you considered PVC pipe? It comes in a variety of sizes from 1/4 inch through 12 inch diameter. On the plus side regular model cement works on it and so does model paints.
I don’t have an exact scale in mind, however, I have access to some display models that I could copy. My particular subject is the Oribital Boost Vehicle (OBV). I live in central Alaska, so just running over to the local hooby shop or even a hardware store is not exactly possible. PVC pipe had not quite come to mind and I’ll have to give that a try! Plus, I think it would even be capable to be put on a lathe and tunred down for the different sections, if the material is thick enough.
Thanks for all of the input!
I have built some 1:1 scale missiles and other models that I use for display purposes. They make great conversation pieces. I use mostly plastic and PVC but do use wood and metal also. So far have made mostly the type of missiles carried under the wings of fighter jets. It’s amazing when people see them and think they are real and actual missiles. I’d love to build a replica of a missile type fired from submarines or other larger missiles. Will have to do some research and find some reference articles and pictures.
