Can anyone recommend any references for scratchbuilding 1/35 weapons? Small arms, machine guns rifles, etc. I don’t have any plans to build a lot right now, but mainly as replacements. Thanks.
Hi Warmaster,
there were some Dragon infantry (American - German) weapons which can be easily copied if this is within the limits of the Law…

Dragon, Tamiya, Italeri, and Academy all make different weapon sets of small arms and some crew served weapons. What type are you looking for?
I need an M240 MG for my 1:35 M1A1 Abrams. Lost the sucker somewhere, so I need a replacement. There may be some out there in sets, but the next part would be building the gun cradle. Ideas?
Dragon makes on in their Modern machine Gun set, although labeled under it’s UK nomenclature I think. Also there are some out there in resin from different makers. The cradle can be scratched from either brass sheet and rod or plastic sheet and rod. Or you can contact the kit maker and try to obtain a replacement 240G from them.
The second option is out because it’s an old Minicraft/Academy model and I didn’t see it on MInicraft’s website. But can you recommend some aftermarket companies that make them?
Legends makes some FN/MAGs in resin for Israeli armor. These can be modified into the US made 240G. Dragon has the UK version (L7A1) in plastic. Verlinden makes an update set for the Academy M1A1 that includes replacement machine guns, both the M2 and M240. Both the old M1A1 (kit 1345) and new M1A1 Iraq (kit 13202) show on the MRC Academy website.
Excellent! (rubs hands greedily)
I’ve already contacted MRC Academy about the replacement parts and they should be here soon. I really need to be more careful when assembling or stripping my models. Having a tank that is complete except for one of its MGs is embarrassing. Could always tell people it’s out at the armorer’s. Thanks Stik.
I’m normally not an advocate of this, but weapons are one thing that I think you, if you have the means, should recast, just to keep for yourself for when you mod/scratch build, and for lost pieces. You can never have to many rifles.
