Scratch Built 1/12 Mercury Redstone

I’ve been planning this for some time and started on her the end of January. Launch Table is complete, and the Tail Unit is ready for the thousands of rivets.

I plan on building the Atomic City Mercury Capsule to sit on top dressed as Gus Grissom’s Liberety Bell 7.

Very impressive start. Excellent work. I can’t wait to see more. If my math is correct it should measure somewhere in the neighborhood of 83 inches?

I have asperations to build a 1/72 Saturn. That will be an undertaking but nothing like this beast.

Looks great. I will be following this thread closely. Real space is one of the genre that I do scratch occasionally.

Holy moly, that is a great start to one incredible project!

Next up on your list should be… a Saturn V. [:P]

That’s exquisite.

Are you planning on keeping the parts separate in case they need to be moved?

Since it’s likely for be about 7’ tall and all.

Yes. All sections will come apart. The Capsule will be lit.

Over 800 rivets applied so far. long way to go

Awesome work as usual. Watching.

The zone between Fins 1 and 4 is complete. So far I’ve placed about 1,400 Rivets

Wow! Impressive work. How tall will the entire piece be?

Almost 7 feet

What a long dragged out process. I’m half complete with the rivets. I started applying the rivets on 6/18/18. So far over 2,500 have been applied. Guess I need to order more rivets……….

Have a great weekend

Awesome work Rob. Keep keeping on. I am cheering you on.

One more section to go. Approximately 3,700 rivets applied so far.

Are you dreaming about rivets yet? How many bits have you used up with the drilling? Do you fingers have any skin left on them? [8-)]

Seriously, this is showing both great dedication AND modeling skills. I am staying tuned into this build till completion. If the upper stages equal this part of the build, we are in for a treat!..

Ben

Thanks guys.

Finished the rivets on the Tail Unit tonight. Approximately 4,800 rivets.

WOW, this build it riveting!..

Sorry, but I could not help that one [;)]

Not to be the clueless one in the room…but I would suspect all those rivets would have been flush mounted…as was with aircraft rivets…?

Was this a unique situation?

Rob

You would think. The Mercury Redstone was designed between 1950 and 1952 by Chrysler and was a direct descendant of the German V-2 Rocket which was also riveted together.

The entire rocket is not riveted. Only the Tail Section, and Instrument Section are riveted. A portion of the Propellant Section is, but most of it is welded.

This is a reference picture of a Redstone Rocket.

Cheers

Tail Unit painted.
