Scratch-build?

Could anyone explain to me (in a couple of lines) what exactly scratch building is.
Is it done without drawings, using bits from other kits or making your own parts?
The sleeper cab in my Western Star just has a simple bunk in it. I have just seen a photo of the interior of a real one and I`m tempted to have a go at re-creating it. Have any of you tried doing the same thing with a 1:24 truck ?

Scratch-building can be done with or with out using drawings it consists of making your own parts from scratch, thats where the term comes from. Using parts from other kits is considered kit bashing,

Or even making parts out of other things like drink bottle fenders. What makes it fun is just the fact of haveing no drawings to go by. The truck in my signiture is a bit of a scratchbuild/kit bash project. The rear body was made from scratch while alot of the tools and equipment came from parts and pices of other kits.

Scratch building or kit bashing is something I do as it adds a bit of “me” to a kit and makes it more unique. Get into it, it adds heaps to the hobby!

Many thanks for your input folks. I`m going to settle for adding hydraulic trailer coupling hoses and fixings to my truck fleet. in order to gain a little experience. If that goes OK, who knows--------------.

Best way to start out is with little stuff like that. Then build up to a whole kits worth.

And then pretty soon you start to feel like you are building a snap tite if you don’t add something not from the kit [:)]

Having just had my first attempt at producing trailer couplings from scratch, I can now see where all the fun and enjoyment comes from in scratch building. Not only that, the first truck in the fleet that I have fitted out looks much better than before.

A very short ipression the word scratch-building :

Start with nothing, end-up with a scale model.

Exactly - now you’re hooked[:D][:D]

Looks like you are well on your way now.

I`d just like to take this opportunity to wish you all
A VERY HAPPY CHRISMAS and to thank you for all your replies and advise.
