Scorpion HMMWV (WIP)

About two months ago I started working on an Academy M1025 1:35 kit.I planned to make it into a semi post Apocalyptic vehicle with a roll cage but my endeauvre came to a schreeching halt when I saw that all the things I wanted to add on my vehicle had one major flaw…There wasnt enough room.

So…after a few swear words and a whole lot of facepalming I saw a solution…add another set of wheels.I got myself a second M1025 kit and started chopping and bashing the two kits together.

The first scratch building I started was on the “pincers” and the “stinger” of the scorpion.

I constructed a spare wheel swingbar for the rear with an attached gun mount for the M60.

I also joined the two 50 cal’s together scratchbuilding custom parts here and there.

The inside of the kit was very basic…and the doors on the inside was really very basic.I replaced the windows with mesh to give it a more Mad Max feel and filled up some panneling on the inside.I primed everything with Tamiya Extra fine white primer and started to place the parts together.I finally had enough spacxe for my idea and started to construct a roll cage from copper rod soldered together.

While still constructing the rollcage I sprayed the seperate parts with Tamiya Dark Yellow.

On the roll cage I added a synthetic material used in wedding dresses etc that resembles a honeycomb grid which would be my mesh grid for another spare wheel to lie on and also add some protection from zombies/mutants/scavengers/politicians.I started detail painting some of the parts and scratch buildt car mats for the floor of the vehicle.I also added a Cargo net baggage catcher in the back of the vehicle.

Seeing that Milla Jovovich probably found this thing somewhere abandoned…it obviously had to be weathered.I started stage 1 of the weathering process by adding rust in strategic places using a sponge and Tamiya red brown.I also weathered the wheels and tires using an oil wash 50/50 mix of ochre and burnt sienna.

Next up was Cargo.I got a few water bottle and beer bottle sets from Meng and scratchbuilt a couple of crates, boxes, tarp etc to add as the survivalists scavenged supplies.

more updates to follow on my progress in near future

Looking good and a great idea. One issue with the weathering though, a HMMWV doesn’t really rust. The hood, doors, and top are all fiberglass. The rest of the body is aluminum. The frame and some smaller fittings are steel, but not a lot. With heavy wear, the paint will rub down to aluminum. This can be heavy in the bed and flat areas above the wheels, in the door openings, and on the inner floor sections.

Thx HeavyArty…It was one of my first problems I encountered when starting out…so I thought to myself…how can I rust it then. The solution…place it in a What if section where an evil maniacal global organisation like Umbrella Corporation decided to fabricate a armored steel version to test their Nemesis project against…[:P]

That’s cool! I didn’t know that the M2 has alternate feed. Looked it up and sure enough.

jip…although…i DID forget to switch the cocking handle over to the left side on the left one…haha

Oh wow, love that. A dually makes a lot of sense and looks cool too! Great job with the conversion and all the extra added details.

And thanks Gino for the head’s up, still the rust looks fantastic even if it shouldn’t be there.

PS: And it’s nice to know I’m not the only person that ends up spraying paint all over my fingers.

‘Hey Cliff, you building another Sherman?’

‘Well yeah, how did you know!?!’

‘Your fingernails are olive drab again…’

As the owner of an hmmwv, this is awesome! I just finished an italeri build as well, but you’re creativity is great! Excellent job… though I have to +1 the rust looking odd. Still, since she’s already a custom, why the hell not be real custom!

HAHA Thx…I call it Modellers Tattoos.

In regards to the Humvee…its a very aggresive looking vehicle…and one of the major flaws I would think is the fact that it has the armor capabilities of a soda can.The bold stance and gaz guzzling engine is very intimidating but it would have been more practical armored from the start in my opinion…although maybe not practical,I am sure some vets may agree.

This is why I decided to place this project in a movie themed setting where anything is possible…light weight armored steel …hell yeah…zombie killing smart bullets…hell yeah…

Anyone know if a six wheel Military version was ever created?I only found six wheel versions in civillian customs (and in Grand theft auto lol)

Aluminum does oxidize, especially in the harsh enviroment of Arrakis - and exposure to the spice Melange has tinged it red…

Sorry, wrong theme…lol

Cool build - will be watching

The Spice IS Life…haha…luv Dune

UPDATE

I added a second layer to my rust effects using a burnt Sienna oil wash and adding some streaking here and there. The crates was also painted and I added some leftover decals to them.
