One note, the below pic you have mistakenly identified as a 5 ton truck. It is actually a M35A3 2 1/2 ton truck, latest incarnation of the venerable deuce-and-a-half.

As far as I know it’s part of the helmet’s protection. It can be fittedt to the helmet or not; here are some pics.
