Sandbags

Some questions regarding Sandbags,

What are the colors used for painting Sandbags?

Otherthan Tamiya’s Military Miniatures Sandbags, how else can I make sandbags?

Thank you [;)]

On my recent trip to japan, I purchased a hand made sandbag set. Theyare reall nice and are even filled with real sand. Regarding the color, i would paint it an ordinary cloth color. (Deck Tan)

[:D] hi,you can get sand bags from italeri allso,i think the color should like the area that the bags are to be used, like sand for sand and mud ,.is this any help to you,[:D]

I’m assuming you mean 1/35; You could roll out lengths of Sculpey about 1/8" wide give or take, and cut them into roughly 1/2" long pieces, texture them with some sandpaper or really fine screening, bake them and weather accordingly…

As far as color, most WWII sandbags were a burlap type medium brown or tan; Current sandbags are a plastic/nylon mesh and are a dark or medium green; Keep in mind for scale, you could paint them black and drybrush them with a medium green and get favorable results…

Using Milliput putty, you can form them the way that gunner describes as far as size goes. With Milliput, you can form the bags to the model. After that is done, use cheescloth or an old rag that has a rough texture to it…press the cloth into the “sandbag” and this will give the bags some texture. When painting, I don’t use the same color, as like everything else used during the war, some items were new and some were used. I’ll use dark brown, tans and sand colors. I’ll then use a light pastel color to highlight the sandbags. Hope this helps.[:D]

Easy answer: Have your 1/35 scale soldiers fill them for you!

Haha… nice one BLAKJAK… anyway, thanks guys for your reply. Does help me lots [:)]

For real 1/35 scale sandbags try http://missionmodels.com/index2.htm
They are the real deal.
The way I see it, things like sandbags, tarps, chains metal tracks, ext should be as real as you can get them. I always try to replace things like plastic sandbags or plastic tracks with the real deal if I can.

Opps, cant link the missionmodel page direcly, just hit “sandbags” in the search feature.

Whoa, that’s a cool site. Thanks Martin.

Using real canvas filled with sand is sure going to make a dio look nice. Are there cheaper ways to do that?

I know this sounds crazy, but use Chiclets candy.
Soak them in water and the hrd outside disolves. This leaves it pliable.
Place on your tank. you can stack them. They kind of fuse together, so there is no need to glue them on. I did this to a Sheman front end and it turned out pretty good.
The candy is cheap.

Haha… won’t the ants come?

Real canvas? May I offer this obersvation? 1/35 canvas, burlap, whatever, would show only the slightest pattern or texture. Can you see the texture of canvas 35 feet away from you? I think it’d be too exaggerated in my opinion.

Paint them. No ants

It may be clear enough to see the pattern at scale 1/35. However, use a magnifying glass [:)].

Oh, paint the Chiclets, but they’ll all look the same. One size.

Don’t let Chiclets know about this or they’ll probanly want a royalty ![(-D]

Maybe one day, there’ll be a dio where we can actually eat it up! [:p]

For sandbag painting, I use Model master british armor sand…and then weather the edges and various spots with model master leather…It makes a nice contrast and realistic look.

Good luck,
Tank

Thank you guys for all your ideas. Now it’s time for me to decide what to go for.

Happy Modelling
