sand

How do you get sand to stay in one place in a diorama. I’m going to do an Africa Korps dio.

Glue it down with white glue (Elmer’s School Glue type). Spread the glue around evenly on the base, and then sprinkle the sand on top. Let dry and then shake off any excess sand. Reapply glue and sand in any spots that didn’t cover fully.

Thanks that helps a lot.[:D]

Do you spray anyhthing over the finished product to help kep it in place?

I am sure adhesive sprays would not hurt

No need to spray it down, the Elmer’s holds it just fine.

I found flour worked great instead of sand. It was closer to scale. After all is dry spray paint the “sand” the color you want. I would practice on scrap first. Remember a tank is heavy and the tracks sink a little in the sand.

thankyou all who responded that helps alot.

thanks guys

One more thing, be sure to use the “sandbox” sand sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc. It’s a finer grind that gives a more scale effect for 1/35th dios…

Just my two cents,

Dennis

For what it’s worth, if there is a fab shop near you or machine shop that has a water jet cnc table, stop by and see if they will give you a bucket of their spent sand. It is used in the cutting process. It’s actually a garnet sand that is shot through a .005" orrifice at tremendous pressure and, with water, is capable of accurately cutting pretty much anything. The san is like a powder after it dries. yet it still retains the crystaline structure and shimme of real sand. Great color as well. I used it on my Honey Dio and was pleased with the results.

The sand looks much better in real life than in the pics. And way better than the model.
