I was amazed to find out that many of the first WWI German u-boats were actually cargo u-boats used to run the blockades the other European countries had set up against the Germans early in the war to conduct commerce with the US. The first ship made, I think, 4 round trips carrying cargo, then was armed with torpedoes and a couple of deck guns, and put to use sinking allied shipping. It was pretty successful at that until ultimately sunk herself.

Makes me wonder about the guy who had stock in the valve business! Enough wheels in there to make your eyes spin!
I must wonder how long it took to train crew to successfully remember how to manipulate all those valves in the proper sequence.
I was just referring to photos of the Type IX C U 505 in my old mid 1960s souvenir booklet.
The only photo of a similar complex bank of valve handles is listed as air valves for the buoyancy tanks.
