The way I hear its done is that you a)put down on the model the color you want to show in the chipping. b)put water where you want it to be chipped. c) put the salt on the water, some will fall off but that increases the randomness of the pattern and makes it more realistic. d)put the camoflauge or paint on the model. e)When the paint is dry, take a cotton swab and rub it against the salt until it is all out from under the paint or all the salt is gone off the model. The result is realistic chipping. Hope this helps.

I painted surface planned to have some “chipping” with testor Aluminum (enamel) and let it dry overnight.
Use some soap and water to wet the surface and placed some tiny salt cristals on it.
It dried within 30 minutes and than I painted iw with my camo color. Few coats.
Wait at least two hours and using some soft cotton piece (t-shirt ) take the salt out with paint on top of it. THe result is pretty convincing. Additional chips can be done with a toothpick.
I would add pictures but … did not figure out how to attach pict to the post, any hints on this subject ?

Here is another how-to
Hi Swanny,
A big THANKS for an invite to an amazing site. Recommended to all modellers. Any one who reads my additions to this forum knows that Ive been building models for years and yet at Swanny
s I found loads of useful and new to me methods. If for no other reason go here to check out his Dornier 217 builds.
Thanks again Gary [8-]
Thanks Gary, glad you found it useful.
Gary,
If you haven’t seen Swanny’s DVD, it is worth it’s weight in gold as a how-to, I HIGHLY recommend it!

Since this is the FSM forum, I guess someone should mention that there is a how-to article covering this in the latest, Weathering/Painting Scale Models special issue of FSM.
[#offtopic]Speaking of that specific FSM issue; isn’t it supposed to be out this month?[:-^]
Ordered mine sometime ago…[banghead]
I looked at a copy of that issue at the LHS last week, should get yours soon I would hope!
