Saab J29 Tunan Re-issue

It seems that Airfix is set to reissue the Heller J29 in 1/72. I’m a huge fan of Saab aircraft, but not much of a fan of Heller models. The Fouga Magister wasn’t too bad, but some of their other kits are Hell-ish. Still, except for the IPMS Austria resin kit, (or the OOP Matchbox kit) it seems to be the only game in town. I know I’m going to buy it, (and I hope they reissue the J32 as well) but has anyone out there built it? Any opinions? Thanks.

I built the Heller J29 kit several years back and quite enjoyed it. It is more accurate than the Matchbox.

It has raised panel lines, but if that doesn’t bother you or you dont mind rescribing, go for it. In my experience, its one of Heller’s better kits.

The detail straight from the box is pretty respectable considering the scale and the kit’s vintage.

Here’s a link to an online review of an older Heller issue of it. I suspect Airfix won’t change much:

I also built the Heller J29 many moons ago.

The kit provided decals and parts for a photo recon version as used by the United Nations in the Belgian Congo. You don’t see many fighter type aircraft in UN markings.

On display at modeling expo’s, my little J29 seemed to receive more interest (especially from the wives, girlfriends etc.) than many of the endless ME 109s, F16s etc that we see ad nauseum. [zzz]

Thanks folks. I’ve wanted one of these for a while, so I’d probably have bought it regardless, but I’m glad to hear it’s a decent kit.
