I started this build two days ago, and so far so good. Very little putty was used on the keel and driveshaft housing on the port side. The hull halves joined very nicely and were welded together with “Tamiya” liquid cement. The putty is also “Tamiya” (but is getting almost impossible to find)white tube. I bored out the bilge pump holes and the water cooling intakes and the exhaust ports, all done with “Dremels” 3 round burr heads. The torpedo tube doors went on perfectlyThe bridge fit flawlessly to the rear deck, as did all of the detail parts. I have read that there is an issue with the forward 20mm fitting correctly in the gunners amored tub, but I will address that at a later point in the build. There are four smoke cannister can mounting rings molded on to the rear deck and the two center rings have to be removed as per the directions. This as far as I have gotten so far. I just wanted to share my build as it progresses.
Austyn, thanks for looking and the encourgement. As you can see sometimes it takes a while to get some lookers and sometimes even longer for some to make comments.
It was great having you up here and sharing the BB-63 USS Missouri build wiith you.[tup][tup][tup]
Nice start to the build doc, especially the extra work on the exhausts. Are you going to be adding one of the numerous PE sets or are you sticking to Revells offering?
Looks so far so good, doc! Is that Revell’s 1:144 kit? If so, is it an older version or newer one? (newer one carries Flak38). I have the older version built but the newer version is still in box.
Excellent work so far, and very fortunately for me you’ve decided to share your build just as I’m about to start mine. Have you seen other published builds of this kit? There’s just an incredible one here: http://hsfeatures.com/s100cw_1.htm
Anyway, I see you’re doing a “build it first and THEN paint” method, yet as I perused the kit’s instructions yesterday I had rejected this out of hand because there are going to be SOO many itty-bitty bits that would have to be painted in place to accomplish this. Could you maybe elaborate a bit on your gameplan? I’d really like to hear whatever you can share about this build.
Thanks, doc! My mistake, it was 1:72 scale, not 1:144. I’m going to get PE upgrade set from Eduard for my S-100 Flak 38 for $39.95. S-100 original’s also available at the same price.
The new S-100 1:35 from Italeri is also tempting because of its size and details. But at nearly $250 here I think it costs too much. I paid only $85 for 80’ Elco 1:35 which is a little shorter than the S-100.
Strange - here in the UK (Great Britain) the Italeri 1/35 Elco costs about £80, and the S-100 about £95. Maybe the increased cost of shipping the larger S-100 model over from Europe is the reason. There’s also a larger price difference in the USA - Squadron.com are asking $135 for the PT and $224 for the S-100.
Well Doc, good luck with the build. I think that given all the akward internal areas near the bridge I’ll be doing a fair amount of paint/assembly/paint/assembly steps a la an aircraft cockpit installation. Keep those pics and commentaries coming–I’ll be watching closely.
