Hi all,
Have recently just sneaked past the front door Revell’s 1/72 S-100.
It was bought on the strength of a portfolio article a few months ago which showed some pretty “cool” camoflage done by Alfonso.
Now I’ve got it past the other half, the other problem is that I’m colour blind.(red & green deficient)
I need the breakdown of those colours and any mix ratios.
Can anyone help?

Unfortunately, as far as I know, camouflage schemes were not carried as standard by any S-100 class boats - the only known use of camouflage on S-100s was as an emergency measure when the boats were travelling between bases in the daytime. They weren’t camouflaged in operational use, it was found that the overall pale grey/white scheme actually provided better concealment at night.
It’s the earlier S-38 class, with the unarmoured bridge, that had the famous “splotch” and “tiger stripe” camouflage schemes. These look a lot like the S-100 at a glance, which is probably the reason for the misconception that S-100s were camouflaged.

Whilst this means you’re rather limited in your choice of colour schemes for the Revell kit, it does make it easier to choose the right paints (even if colourblind), as it’s basically painted in different shades of grey, from very pale grey (“Schnellbootweiss”) for the upper hull (Revell advise using a 50/50 mixture of white and light grey for this), to almost black for the lower hull below the waterline (I used Tamiya “NATO Black”) The deck is a slightly greenish-grey (Revell suggest their “Dust Grey” colour for this, which is what I used, and it looks OK), and the wooden parts of the deck would be in a bleached wood colour (although I think the wood parts were painted the same colour as the rest of the deck on some boats).
Hope this info helps! Sorry I can’t give more advice on paint mix ratios - the only paints I have recent experience with are Tamiya and Revell acrylics.

My friend EPinniger is correct. There is no photographic evidence that a S-100 Class Schnellboot ever having a camouflage scheme. The drawing everyone keeps seeing on the Internet and various books and publications is reported to be taken from a Russian modeling magazine and the source of that drawing is rather suspect. Please bear this in mind.
The only Kalotte bridged Schnellboote that carried any camouflaged scheme were the S-38b Class. That being said, there is a photograph in Schnellboot In Action that shows a S-100 boat in a temporary camouflage scheme. But, it was not used regularly.

So, with the information you’ve already gotten, if you want accurate paint colors for your S-100, we have them in our Colourcoats enamels, matched to original RAL paint chips:
Vertical surfaces: Schnellbootweiss (Colourcoats KM 10);
Underwater hull: Dunkelblaugrau (Colourcoats KM 03);
Decks: Blaugrau 58.1 (Colourcoats KM 12).
No need to mix to try and match colors.

If you’d like to, you can always throw in some colour by doing a Mediterranean boat, with the white and red deck recognition stripes…

Yes,have seen those recognition stripes.I may do them as my Dad’s uncle got blown out of the sky while attacking one in his Beaufighter and those stripes are the last thing he remembers before being pulled aboard by the crew.He is the first one to say he was treated decently.Finished the war as a POW.

Do you find the kit as bad as everyone “in the know” says it is?

To be honest, Garth, this kit is a real pleasure IF one doesn’t expect a 100% accurate model, the fit is more than reasonable, the instruction are clear and best of all, you don’t need to cut up the kit if you want a waterline model.
I admit that an expert on the subject will find 101 errors in the kit, but the aim of the game is still having pleasure in the hobby.
This kit is at least 30 years old, but I’ve built kits that are made in the last decade the went together a lot worse than this one.

That is certainly a refreshing take on this hobby. Thank you for making my day. Now, I’ve got an unbuilt example of this kit in my collection that I may or may not have built … I don’t know yet. I did have the Revell S-100 built up for me. That’s an awesome model.
I have a question about the Airfix kit - the guns - is the 2.0cm gun good enough or could it be replaced by an aftermarket one? I am not familiar with the contents of the kit so I don’t know if it has the MG15 (MG34?) on the foredeck. Does it? And, if it does? Is THAT one good enough or could it stand to be replaced by an aftermarket one?

I´m not that far yet, but there is a mg on the foredeck, however, the kit mg is very crude and could better be replaced by an aftermarket one, which I will not do, since I´m also participating in the airfix fairwell GB where AM is not allowed, the AA gun of the aft section is ok in my eyes, but ofc there are a lot better ones available now, we must never forget the age of the kit.
But as I have said before, this is a very nice kit for it´s age, and one of the main reasons that I´m doing this kit is because I remember my father building this kit as well, he may have never become a ‘real’ modeller (he didn´t have the habbit of painting his models [:I] ) but as a youngster I sure had a lot of fun with the models he made primarely for my pleasure.
I have been waiting for the re-release of this model for many years and in no way I am disappointed in the fact that Airfix did not retool the kit. For me it´s a journey into my childhood before an accurate representation of the real S-7 type.
After building quite a few of those kits, I don’t know what all the complaints are all about…it goes together smoothly (ok, a little putty here and there), has exceptional detail, and comes pretty damn close to matching the lines of the early S boats. Hey, they weren’t the sleek 100 class boats, and the outline was chunky. The moldings are still crisp and clear, and while complex, the whole thing comes together to make a real interesting model.
Looking forward to seeing more and more S boots on these forums!

yup, gonna order the S-100 soon to sit next to the S-7 [:)], and remember, when building a German WWII vessel, join the Kriegsmarine GB…
More or less my thoughts too, it’s certainly an old and clunky kit and needs some work, but the same
could be said of the Revell PT boat.
As I think I’ve said before on these forums, if you’re only going to build one Schnellboot model, definitely pick the Revell S-100 - but if you’re particularly interested in modelling torpedo boats, or 1/72 naval vessels in general, you’d be missing out in not also adding the Airfix S-7 to your collection. It’s certainly not a perfect kit, but it’s a distinctive-looking vessel quite different in appearance to the S-100, and it’ll probably be a while until we see another kit of the same subject (although you never know…)
On the subject of Schnellboots, my S-100 model is now complete, I’ll take some photos as soon as possible.
