RUSTIC LOOK

I was given a model of a Sherman tank and i need help to make it look like it has been sitting up for a long time and noboby has touched it. I would like some ideas on how to paint it so that it looks rusted. Please help. I usually just build models and paint them like the picture on the box. I want to start building diaramas and make some of them look like they have been sitting in a junkyard for a long time.

Thanks

Rust on Sherman’s is a highly debated topic area, and you may have opened up a can of worms…not your fault though.

The OD paint on Shermans was VERY durable and rarely do you see rust on them. Go to your local “Sherman on Display” and look at the hull, even after 60+ years you will see very little rust. I suggest you just “lighten” your OD to give it a sun bleached look. I use a product call MMP Worn OD, which is a weathering powder that is very easy to use. I thin it down with water and spray it where I want the worn look, a whala…I look like I know what I’m doing! great stuff…but I’m not sure if it’s sill available.

I agree with IYAAYAS.
Try airbrushing the base OD then adding tiny amounts of yellow to get an oxidized shade then dust a coat of that on. Followed by another lighter shade of that but shot over the top areas only, where the sun would hit for the past 50 years.
Use washes where the transmission would leak and other oil would leak and not be attended to.
Wash with dark brown where water would gather during rain, then follow in the same areas with rust orange washes, after the first brown washes dried.
A soft brush with dusty earth tone pastels can finish this off, after everything totally dries.
