This was supposed to be a quick build but then I had to go and decide I wanted the white top scheme. By the dates on my build photos I started it in late March 2018 and built it along side the Monogram 1/48 early B-26 con version and the Airfix 1/48 B-57. What was I thinking!!
Anyway, it’s done and here it is. I used Caracal decals set 144002 which has markings for 11 different C-141 schemes and worked as nice or better than any decals I have ever used. In these markings it is actually a C-141C, the Hanoi Taxi in the Air Force Museum.
Overall fits were good, though a little extra effort was need on the landing gear. Details here in my build log:
I wonder if anyone has attempted to backdate the Roden kit to a C-141A? The Caracal decals have markings for a couple, as well as for a NASA bird.
I looked into doing the conversion, but it would require a “Z” shaped cut on the aft fuselage, not a straight chop. I think the fairing on the spine needs to be removed as well.
There were a bunch of C-141Bs operating out of Hickam AFB back in the 1980s; I sure miss them. The MAC grey/white scheme was sharp! I liked it better than the Euro-1 “lizard” camo that followed.
The B had fuselage plugs added fore and aft of the wings to increase the length by approx 23 feet. The air refueling boom fairing receptacle was also added. It should be an easy conversion to backdate a B to an A.
