Road help

OK, I’m building a 1/18th Dio. The scene is a gas station on the edge of a town. The Germans have taken over it and made it into a guardhouse/check point. The road in front of it is being blocked off with dragons teeth, all kinds of other stuff.

Here’s my problem…I am struggling with what type of road material, should it be cement…dirt…did they have asphalt??? If asphalt what would you use? Really don’t want to do it in cobblestone. help me make up my mind[xx(]

any and all help will be a relief[^]
Thanx

Where’s your gas station located??? They were far fewer surfaced roads in Russia than in France, for instance…

well I was kinda thinking somewhere in Eastern Germany, or in France.

I should also have asked ‘when’… Anything up until end of WWII, maybe even up to the end of the '40s, dirt tracks would always look OK.

And by the way, what are you modeling at that scale???

Yeah I think your right I will go with the “dirt” plan.

Sorry dj I didn’t answer your question[V]
I have a hanomag that I made into a recovery vehicle, that will be moving these dragonteeth in position.

That sounds good. Keep us updated on your progress!

I don’t think you would find dragonteeth on the road. Dragonteeth were put in the fields and other areas in order to force armor and vehicles to use the roads. The roads were easier to defend and artillery would be zeroed in on the road. Mines were usually placed on the road just past where the vehicles were forced to avoid the dragonteeth.

Roads in Western Europe had only the major roads paved. Most other roads were dirt with oil sprayed on them to keep the dust down. It wasn’t untill after the war that the roads were improved.

I like your idea for the diorama.

Well, I made the teeth a while ago and thought what the heck! But I do have some barriers that I made,(in scale) wood with large wood supports, go some sandbags and some barbed wire, made a gate(like a railroad crossing) striped in red and white with reflectors on it. A alarm bell on a pole, a few other goodies. I just don;t have an idea for the hanomag to do something. I was goin to have it putting the teeth in position…
maybe I’ll have to put the Tiger in for backup! LOL[:D]
