I am currently working on the Tamiya 1:350 Bismarck 78001. I will be rigging the model with some fishing line, but was curious to whether I should hold it down with super glue or tie knots?
I am worried about using super glue because I don’t want a small blob to be seen, but if I use to little super glue I don’t feel the bond will be strong enough. On the other hand, elmers glue (and other white glue) feels much to weak.
I will be buying a photo etch set for the ship mostly for the railing. Can I scratch make railing by using vertical poles along the edge of deck and then running 3 wires horizontally along ship, and glue them onto the vertical post? Or should I get the photo etch set to get the railing along with some extra details? The two photo etch I was considering are the Tom’s Modelworks 3512 or the Eduard 53002.
I would glue. There is really no ‘blob’ of glue when the line is carefully laid to the yard and fixed with a liquid superglue. Knots tend to blob up, especially when you add some glue or Future to secure them & prevent unraveling (wotse when you cut the tag close).
You can make your own rail runs and it can be quite effective in larger scales.
You’re worried about blobs of glue on the yards – you will have many more opportunities to blob up this way. You also need to worry about keeping the lines parallel to the deck and to each other.
I agree. I have done individual posts and railings in larger scale, but it would be horrendous in 1:350.
And for both railings and rigging, the problem with either at that scale is getting fine enough wire or thread. Oversize rigging and railings are quite visible and detracting. For thread I have gone to 5 mil stuff, and it looks great, but is barely visible, which means it is really hard to work with Trying to tie that many knots on stanchions would be insufferable.
Ok, well I will be going with some photo etch rather than scratch rails. I’m a teen so I don’t have the biggest budget, gold medal models detail set is very nice (more parts) but is more expensive (50$). I will be sticking to the eduard set which is 30$. Maybe the Tom’s modelworks 3512 which is only 17$… but might skip on that one because their customer service didn’t reply to whether it fits the Tamiya bismark. If any of you know please let me know. Marcus McBean also mention the Tom’s modelwork is a little flimsy.
Yea, Tamiya most likely has sufficient detail. But I’d like to get some railings and couple ladders do detail the model a bit more. If it is sufficient without photo etch, I guess I will stick to the cheaper Tom’s Modelworks option.
Yea, just built the cannons at the moment, going to make the blast bags with putty. Going to the AMPS show in Austin tomorrow and bringing an amx 13 and Il2. Will resume building the ship next week throughout september and october. Going to bring the finished ship to the Austin IPMS show in october and LHS show the week after.
I will take photos and post a thread as I go, or maybe when I finish. I’ll see.

I’ve decided to purchase the tom’s modelworks 3512 set. It’s cheap at around 20$ but will be good enough to add another element of detail. I’ll be ordering off scale hobbyist so it will be here by Thursday or so. I’ll start building whenever I get it so most likely start a work in progress thread for it this weekend.
