Hey all,
I have been eyeballing a set of riffler files in the most recent squadron catalogue. Before I spend the $18.00 on them, I wanted to check and see if anyone has a set (or one similar). Are the worth it? Do you use them a lot? Would you recommend them?
They are nice to have when you need them.
As Woody noted, they’re really nice when you need them. I don’t use them on every model I build, but find that they will often get into areas that I can’t get sandpaper or straight files into with out damaging the surrounding details. Plus the shapes often let me maintain curves on the model better than straight files or sandpaper.
Having said that, would I recommend you run right out and by a set of riffler files. That depends. If you already own a set of jewelers files, then by all means get the rifflers. However, if you don’t have a set of jewelers files, I feel your money would be better spent getting them first, then a while down the road, getting the riffler files.
I had the riffler file set from Squadron. They’re ok, but a little hard to use at times because of their length. I bought this set from MicroMark: http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Product&ID=82121
I’ve found them to be much easier to use and the handle can be used with my other files.
Just my opinion.

I second the idea that a good set of jewelers or small swiss pattern files will get used more than the rifflers will. I use my riffs for rough shaping on most of my scratchbuilding projects.

Thanks for the insight. I do have a nice set of jeweler’s files already, so I think I might add the rifflers to my tool kit.
