Jake
The news listed listed that his fame was in westerns, but I too remember him as the roll of salty, cool, determined ship captians.
I remember him more as a cowboy than a sailor. But whatever he did, he was one of the most professional actors out there, and did all roles with integrity. I recall him in “Judgement at Nuremburg”.
Another cultural icon gone. RIP!
hey 93 he had a good long life
Some more of his maritime films are:
Halls of Montezuma
Slattery’s Hurricane
Panic in the Streets (Widmark plays a US Public Health Service officer - the PHS is one of the 7 US Uniformed services; PHS doctors, dentists, and pharmacists can be found at the largest USCG installations)
Destination Gobi
Hell and High Water
Flight from Ashiya (okay, it’s about the USAF Air Sea Rescue Service flying the Grumman Albatross flying boat)
Widmark made many more than the 40 films mentioned in the obit I heard…
Including his first movie role as the crazy killer that shoved the old woman in a wheelchair down the stairs!
“Kiss of Death”
He stood tall in many young boys eyes on Saturdays watching him on the “tube” saving the Pacific from the E-vil sons of Nippon!!!
