I know we have had threads about the Montrose/Randall and the Hawaiian Pilot C-3 before. I was looking through photos yesterday and realised that the Navy ships were based on the VC2-S Victory type. The basic hull form seems to be the same. The cargo gear seems to be slightly different, with kingposts forward on the Navy version but a single mast on the civilian versions.
Anybody know if a Revell Randall/Montrose kit couldn’t be converted to a civilian Victory?
It really depends on your ability to scratch-build… :-} BlueJacket Shipcrafters (www.bluejacketinc.com) has a 1/192 scale kit of a VICTORY and sells the plans separately. If you want to build a specific merchant vessel, you’ll need to compare photos of it to the Revell kit and see what has to be removed/added.
A year to two ago, I did the reverse with the BJ kit. I built BOTTINEAU (APA 235) for one of their customers. You can see a photo of her on the BJ site under “Custom Models”.
Thanks Al. Since I posted the above I bought a Montrose kit. I compared it to a picture I have of the Beaver State, a States Marine Line ship. It looks like it needs a little bit of superstructure removed from the hull aft of the main house. I have just started scratchbuilding but this might be good practice at some time in the future.
Hi, onyxman, I know it is a couple of years since you bought the Montrose/Randall kit, but if you are converting to a civilian do you want the decal sheet that came with the kit? I need the decal sheet for a project I am working on. My profile should have my email.
Hi , I don,t think you can do it easily but it is worth the effort . Myself , I took the “HAWAIIAN PILOT” and converted her to a VICTORY. I was lucky though . I was in the engineering crew on one fresh out of mothballs and under contract to OLYMPIC STEAMSHIP CO .out of SEATTLE , WASHINGTON in 1979 . There was certainly plenty of referrences there . I took the RENWAL aka and did a better job converting it to a VICTORY as well . I wish you the best in you,re endeavor . tankerbuilder
Which confuses the poop out of me… the Hawaiian Pilot is a C-3. Now, I am or was planning to make her into a Bogue, but there’s so many new CVE and CVL and CV kits out that it just seems like a lot of work in a weird scale.
I would second the “lot of work in a weird scale” motion if you’re looking to turn it into an aircraft carrier, especially if it comes to adding, well, aircraft. There’s just too much available now in 1/350. It’s a good time to be a ship modeler.
