revell U-47, has anybody built it?

Hey guys, i recently got a Revell 1/125 scale german U-boat, the U-47. This kit features an interior and precut viewing panels to see the inside. When i get time to build it, it will be my first ship/sub model. I have already had some experiance with armor and aircraft, but this unique model caught my attention. I really like how you can model the inside. I was wondering if anyone here has built this model before, and can give me some suggestion. If you have any basic sub building techniques, those are also greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

P.S. I think it is a reissue of an older model.

It’s an old model with a few faults, but with some minor work can be really nice. I’d suggest purchasing a few packages of model railroad brake handwheels in both N and HO gauges, as the kit lacks them and they’re readily apparent on a sub. You’ll need lots of scrap wire of different sizes too, as the kit lacks the internal piping and plumbing for the most part.

Another good idea is to rent a copy of Das Boot. Yes, I know, it’s a studio set, but they took extra care in getting the interior of the sub right. If you really want details, a copy of the Anatomy of the Ship book on the Type VII by Gerhard Rossler is helpful.

You can also get good interior shots of U-995 at Laboe from www.uboat.net

Hope that helps!

Jeff

The kit will build into a nice model in itself but by far does not represent a real u-boat interior.

Jeff pretty well sums it up with his suggestions.

The book Anatomy of a ship Type VII Uboat by David Westwood is a must if you will undertake
this project. It has all the line drawings you’ll ever need; it is worth the money.
Also do a web search for CMK resin u-boat interior sections.
This aftermarket company makes interior sections in 1:72 scale for the Revell Germany u-boat.
Use these photos and sketches as reference; they will help alot.
All in all this U-47 kit can be turned into a superb kit representing a u-boat in this scale.

Have a nice day and happy modelling!
Joe

thanks guys, i’ll definately look into that. this may turn into my first kit using aftermarket details, etc.

Does anyone know of any detail sets for this kit? Its a type VII U-boat in 1/125 scale. Thanks for your help.

Check out Nautilus Models. They made a resin update set, but have ceased production since the 1/72 U-boat came out.

They do however, still have the PE fret available for the kit.

I would call James Corley at Nautilus (aka AAA Hobbies in Atlanta) and speak to him directly. Make sure you tell him Jeff from FSM sent you!! They like to hear that their advertising is working!!
