My local discount store has Rev of Ger. 1/72 scale F-101B and F-104C on sale. I was wondering if anyone knew the origin of these kits, or had opinions on them. Given all the mold sharing these days, I was wondering if these are really ancient Revell kits reissued, or reboxed Hasegawas or other manufacturer. The Voodoo looked pretty impressive for the scale, if the pics on the box are any indicator. The Starfighter was harder to tell. If these are quality kits, I’ll take the trouble to go back and pick them up. (The store also had several Revell 1/32nd Mirage III kits for sale that looked like they just got pulled from a 1967 time vault. Probably pick up another of those if I go back, too!)
Disclaimer: I haven’t seen this kit myself, so I could be totally wrong here.
Having said that, if you’re lucky, it could be this one - the review suggests that it is a direct scale down of the Monogram 1/48th kit of the F-101. Personally, if it is this one, I’d rather this than the Hasegawa kit, which if I recall correctly, is positively ancient (and is an RF-101 variant?). The other possibility is that Revell might have reissued the old Matchbox moulding.
This quick rundown of F-101 kits may be of assistance.
Both the kits you’re looking at should be good.
RoG did reissue two 1/72 F-101s one was the old matchbox kit, but they issued that very soon after taking over Matchbox and the kit was clearly labeled “Matchbox” Later they reissued a Revell kit that was tooled in about 1990 and by all appearances pretty much pantographed down from Monogram’s 1/48 kit.
The F-104 is probably a reissue of a monogram kit that came out in the early 90s, I bought that one and its really nice.
Jeff, I have the F-101 Voodoo kit. It is a Revel original and is very detailed kit for it’s age. It has recessed panel lines, and a fairly detailed cockpit. The molds are crisp and of excellent quality. The kit also comes with Falcon missles and a very detailed internal weapons bay in case you want to display this feature. An excellent buy if you get your hands on one!
