Revell-Monogram kits worth getting

I still buy the P-51B, in the old pre-merger boxing, the P-40B, the P-47D kits, the TBD, the P-39, the P-38, and the large bomber kits.

Their large bomber kits are STILL some of the best “bang for your buck” kits available out there to this day.

Oh yeah!

I’d like to see a 1965 Dodge Polara Police car…[whstl]

I’ve had nothing but the best from the new owners, sorry your situation did not work out. Were you dealing with Tower Hobbies? Not my experience at all.

I just got two of the new 1/48 Stearman and I really like it.

John

No I wasnt dealing with a distributor or the retailer, I did the online parts order where you give them the kit number, and then the part numbers directly to Revell. In no uncertain terms they told me I was SOL and that I needed to get in touch with the retailer, who I wont name here but take’n care of the customer wasnt on thier agenda the day I needed them. So I’ll buy the old issue kits and go from there.

Just curious, but which kit was it? And what was the problem with the part(s)?

it was two kits actually, the Avenger, one of its bomb bay doors wasnt completely formed in the mold, and the other was SBD Dauntless, its prop wasnt completely formed in the mold and there were some other parts also not completely molded.

I’ll build a new door for the Turkey, and scrounge a prop for the SBD

Wow! Thats not good at all. And they shot you down for both parts? Very unusual in my own experience and all the others that I have read of on here as well.

If you look in the Trainer GB I am doing this kit now. The first post has pictures of the sprues and decals.

ive got quite a few Jets.planes from revell,F-106 D dart,F-14 Tomcat,Sr-71 blackbird,bellcraft Huey gunship,and a bunch more,and they all went together well.

I’ve recently read more stories like this, including a build article at Modeling Madness featuring the TBF, in which the author said he always buys 2 kits now, when he buys Revell boxings of the old Monogram kits. He noted that he sees nearly half the time that one of the boxings will have short-shots, lots of flash, and other signs of mold wear.

Nearly all of the Monogram kits in my stash today are older boxings that I’ve bought on the second-hand market, boxings that were on the hobby store shelves when I was building as a kid. Except for the newer designs, of course, like the Ventura, or the P-47N. I do have an F-80 on the bench, though, that’s a late-90s boxing, and the right fuselage half was badly warped. I can understand, if the molds from the old subjects have worn out.

I have a pretty good stash of the older Monogram boxings stashed away myself, but to have to buy doubles of every new Revell boxing of a classic kit is VERY UNSAT…

Revell can take a flying leap as far as I’m concerned, my money will go to other manufacturers or to the old boxings second hand, they royaly burnt thier bridge with me

Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face, though, at least as far as the Ventura is concerned, if you haven’t already bought one. It’s a very good kit, and very much in the tradition of the classic Monogram multi-engine kits from the Seventies. Good engineering, good detail, out of the box, it makes a nice model of the subject, or you can go nuts on it and super-detail it. I’m building mine as an Atlantic ASW bird, on the ramp at an NAS here in the East Coast, with the crew preparing to board. I’m opening the crew hatch and adding some interior details to it.

yep I got one of them before the CS issue came up, and youre right, its a beauty even in the box

They are doing to be issuing a British variant of the Ventura with the glass nose and different turret in the near future. And they just released a PT-17 that is getting very nice reviews. If those are aircraft that you want in your collection…

Ditto that. I built one, and would love to find another. It was not an expensive kit, and went together very nicely.

Check ARC, the Catalinas pop up there pretty regularly, and I have seen new boxings of the -5A at a hobby shop in Jacksonville

And I have to say the new Skyraider thats been released by Revell looks good too, but I have as yet been unable to force myself to buy a Revell product…

Check eBay for the Cat, too. One of the boxings, I think it was the ProModeler boxing, had an additional set of 5 crew figures, too, it I remember correctly.

That was the 5A Black Cat boxing I think
