Revell Germany PBY-5A USAF Search and Rescue 1/48...Kit 04507

This is my PBY. I left off the aerials until I decide how to hang it. Eduard masks, Tamiya paint. The canopy was damged and so was the replacement. I had to paint out the back two top canopy windows above the cockpit to hide this. The large decal lettering was all cut out by hand with an excel #11 blade, to completely avoid silvering. I wasn’t going to risk it.

Any questions on the build just ask.

Good looking build.

Very nice.

Nice work. Any rough spots in the build besides the canopy? I have a wheel-less version in the stash.

John

Looks like a fine finish to (what I hear) is a challenging kit. I look forward to building one and hope it turns out nearly as well as yours. Thanks for posting your pics!

Mike

Hello Wilbur - I’m glad to see you have finished this one, and it looks good! Sorry for you that you had to fight with the canopy and get angry about it, but I think the results are worth it. Thanks for sharing and have a nice day

Paweł

Yea,looks really sweet.

Thanks Guys,

And Wolfhammer , the kit is a very well engineered kit except for the short injected canopies I received. The only thing I could say is try to get the Eduard mask set to save a lot of headaches.

All the black line demarcations (which are supplied as decals which I did not use) were masked and painted on. It just looks better this way. I used the Tamiya tape for curves for the back fuselage yellow section black lines.

And as I said before the letters and numbers decals are quite large so to avoid any silvering at all, they were very carefully cut out with a new #11 blade. (I use the excel double honed as they are much sharper than regular x-acto blades).

All canopies were dipped in Future and C’A’d on very sparingly for a good bond.

I black based this model but it is very hard to see the paint variation in the photos.

Gorgeous build! I have the Airfix 1/72 version in the stash…I might just have to start it soon!

Great Job, WW. I always liked the PBY and yours turned out wonderful. I wish I had picked up the kit before they bumped up the price. It’s on my "to get/do list.

Thanks for the tips on what you did on the model Wilber, it looks impressive.

My hat is off to you sir, for getting the Yellow to look “Just right” ! I know Yellow is a "Bear " to work with.

That is one PRETTY bird !

I’m with you on the “manufacturing Defect” concerning the canopy. I would have "PITCHED A FIT " too !

WW,

Wonderful job on your build. The masking work and paint look amazing…great job!

Beautiful work!

Goodness, that is simply one of the best Cat models I have ever seen.

I second Mr. Morrison’s post.

Awesome build the cat has always been one of my favorites. Got one of those in the stash I’m wanting to do it up as a black cat anti-ship. Any other things to watch out for in this kit?

Great job! What brand of blue paint did you use? Did you mix your own shade?

Well done[Y][Y][B]

Thanks Guys.

All paint was Tamiya acrylic (Field blue , Sky Gray, Flat Yellow)

However the plane was black based. The whole thing was all canopies masked then sprayed with Testors flat black enamel. Then after a few days dry time, mottle coats started with each color. Gray first then blue then yellow. The black stripes are actually the testors black, masked over.

The field blue looks darker because of the black base.

There is a lot of masking here, and plenty of time allowed to dry and gas out between coats/colors.
