I bought a semi-built Revell CSS Alabama. It has some upgrades? But there are 3 versions of the cannon in the box. The painted one does not look like a Blakely. The openings in the back have all been covered and glued shut. The air intakes also appear to be different. Was the previous owner trying to make this into the Kearsage? Nothing on the deck is glued on, I was just checking for missing or broken pieces.
That’s quite possible that the previous owner was attempting to convert her into the Kearsarge. From what I’ve read, the Alabama model more closely resembles the Kearsarge.
Welcome to the forum and good luck with your build!
PS> Maybe someone with more ship building knowledge will pipe in.

I know absolutely nothing about these ships, but I found this exchange really interesting.
The fact that somebody can look at a partly built CSS Alabama, notice a few odd details, and start wondering whether the previous builder may actually have been trying to turn it into a Kearsarge is fascinating to me. That kind of very specific knowledge is one of the things I enjoy about this forum.
I also like the idea of taking over somebody else’s unfinished project and trying to understand what they were attempting before deciding how to carry it forward. Depending on the story behind it, there can be something pretty satisfying about finishing what somebody else started.
You are not wrong. I figured it was just a normal Alabama model but the few oddities made me wonder. Also some of the color choices started to clear up the picture as well. Never thought I’d be trying to figure out someone’s train of thought as they were working on this.
If you do a search on “CSS Alabama” in the forum, you’ll find a ton of information concerning this model. It seem others have decided it makes a better Kearsarge than a model of the Alabama.

Just out of curiosity, do you know anything about the person who originally started building this model, or how it came into your possession? Sometimes the story behind an unfinished model is every bit as interesting as the model itself. Especially when you’re trying to figure out what the original builder had in mind!
