Revell "classic" 1/32 (Finnish) Hurricane MkI *WIP*

Hey folks,

Got my mitts on this little box today:

Revell (of germany) reissued a few old kits last year, firing up the old molds once more and adding some new decals to them. This Hawker hurricane in 1/32th scale can safely be called “ancient” but this is not really much of a problem to me as i am most interested in the finish, not the accuracy and/ or detail on this kit. Raised panellines, horribly fitting and spartan parts and most of all a wealth of flash on the parts will provide for an interesting adventure as i build this kit.[:#]

MkI as stated on the box is to be taken with a grain of salt as it is actually a MkIIc with the four 20mm Hispano cannon as opposed to the eight browning .303’s you would expect:

So to make it at least “look” like a MkI, one will need to do some cutting, sanding and drilling to at least get the most obvious difference between the two versions out of the way, namely the armament. The general outline is very similar though.

Did i say ancient? Well… look at the stamp on the inside of the lower wing section:

Even older than yours truly…[:)]

Final thing to say in my little intro would be that i intend to add a little “twist” to this build as i intend to paint it in finnish markings. There’s something about the finnish camouflage schemes on their hurricane’s and brewsters that have always attracted me. The next picture is taken from a flight simulation game and shows the finish i am aiming for:

Sooo, certainly not a tamigawa flashy glamour build but certainly will be fun to attempt and build[;)] Thanks for watching and stay tuned as i go along.

wow hard to believe Thats the original Mk1 artwork on the box with the Mk2 kit in it ! It is still marked as Stanford-Tucks plane as well. When I saw your post I nearly crapped myself! Ran to the stash and saw my original Mk1 has the 8 brownings whatta relief! I found an old eduard p/e set for the cpit as well. Way to drop the ball on that one Revell!!

Dig in Richard !

I purchased that kit in January as soon as I saw it. I had been looking for a 1/32 Hurricane to complete the collection - now I have Hurri’s (either in kit form or finished) in in every major scale from 1/24 down to 1/144.

Finished: 1/48 Monogram classic, 1/24 Airfix classic, 1/144 Sweet & 1/72 Revell Germany

I’m about 95 % finished with mine. Yes - there is a good amount of flash - but I found the fit to be very good. The kit itself builds up alot like a 1/72 scale kit - It’s a quick build - just bigger and with a little more engine detail. And as for being ancient - well I guess that just depends from which side of 1971 you’re looking. ; ) There are a few people I know (my kids) who think that anything before “the turn of the millennia” is ancient. Yikes !

The kit appears to be a Mk. I, that was at some time converted to a Mk. IIc, that has instructions on how to get it back to being a Mk. I. (Whew ! - sounds like the long way around the barn) The instructions tell you which bumps to cut off or file down. If you build it as a Mk. II, there are some panel lines around the gun bays that really should be removed.

I decided to stick with the Mk. II configuration and get creative with some off scale decals. She’s being done as an East India Squadron bird. (like the 1/72 scale white-striped one in the above pic) Pics will follow soon. Looking forward to seeing yours.
