Check this link, gives a huge amount of information on the Flowers. I can also recommend the “Great Little Ships” PE sets to super detail this model. Still building mine, the fit is dreadful and the model is extremely coarse but it does provide a great base to work on. To produce a good looking Flower will take a lot of time and extra cash.If you invest the time and money you can reach very nice results.
Yes Julian I’ve seen that great site. Unfortunately the GLS sets will cost something like $200 US dollars to get, so that’s out of the question for me for one ship. I have bought K&S misc brass tubing set and some other brass tubing (quite cheap) to help improve some things.
I do wish I could buy just the ladders in 1/72 scale etched brass.
I have just completed the task of sanding the Revell raised wood decking lines off most of the deck area, to get it as the ship should be.
dear snowberrians: i have been trying to buy this kit for a year so far, just can’t get one at a price i’m willing to pay for somthing that i might never finish. specifically, i wish to do the kit as the alternate, the uss saucy. my rationale is simple: my last name is SAUSSY. i haven’t been able to find anything much on that reverse lend-lease vessel, any suggestions?
Thanks for that great site Wilbur, I had not seen that diorama yet and it looks awesome. Huge but awesome. Don’t think I could give up that much space in my house at the moment. Would like to do something like that in the future with a U-boat though instead of the S-boat.
I just started building my Snowberry as well and I am not that much further ahead than you. I found several good resource books at the public library. I’ll post the titles when I get home as I would probably guess wrong if I tried to give them to you now. I know what you mean about the price of the AM stuff, too pricey for me too, besides, scratch building is way more fun [;)]
razordws, I am going to attempt the paint tone and weathering from that incredible dio “Duel at Sea”…I’ve got the deck on after scribing somewhat correct deck plate lines using dymo tape to guide the back of my #11 blade. The fit is far from perfect so you will be filing. I also glued pieces under the bow deck section that also go under the second section (for strength) in the middle as its quite flimsy. All in all it looks to be an awesome model.
I will post photos when they come back. Keep me apprised of your progress.
Sanding, lots and lots of sanding! [;)] I haven’t had much time to work on it but I have the hull together with the suports and some of the other structures have been assembled but that’s it. I want to get the hull painted before I put the deck on so that I can install the porthole windows before putting the deck on. That way I don’t have to mask them. What are you using as a guide /reference for the deck pattern?
just a suggestion on image search: i’ve been finding a lot more specific types of image/pics using webcrawler and/or copernic. don’t know why but the results are about double
During the search, have you seen the following ship? :
Probably not, because this is just a model in one of my pages. It was built OOB with some scrathbuilt parts (main gun detail & tiny copper rings for rigging) by “Chakraphad”. More pics are available in the following page (in this page you’ll also see its opponent - U-Boat VII 1:72) : http://www.falconbbs.com/model21d.htm
I had come across that one. It looks like a very nice build, however I was trying to avoid the sharp contrast in the blue and green camo colors that you see in that build. I can say that I was trying to replicate Joseph Neumeyers extraordinarily realistic build…and may have gotten some of the way there with the colors but not completely. I started out using MM camo gray (which is almost white), yet decided to add more flat white. I once built the Tamiya Vosper and used camo gray. When I used my black oil paint wash to weather it, it came out too dark. That is why I am using almost white on the Snowberry as Mr. Neumeyer did. A black oil wash should get it right were it should be.
I also notice that the wood decks on the stern of the ship in your posted pics should have been steel deck plating, from my research. I hope I’m right.
In any case I’m loving this model already. It is huge.
