It’s been a bit, but I wanted to share this one. The basis for this build was the Revellogram F4U-4- yes, that one. The notorious old kit from 1963 with all the working features. I had been wanting to build a Korean War era Corsair, and Hobby Lobby had one on the shelf during a 40% off sale. I built this kit twice as a kid, with mixed results. The working bits worked for roughly 8 minutes after completion back then. Anyway, I wanted to try to make something respectable out of the old kit, using scratch building and as much of the kit as possible.
This build used a fair amount of putty and patience. I scratch built the wing folds, except for the angled bits- those were leftover from a Tamiya kit. Other small pieces for the landing gear were scratched from styrene, and the kit engine/cowl was wired. The cannons were enhanced with styrene rod, and I reconfigured the rockets to F4U-4B configuration. The kit canopy was incorrect for an F4U-4B, so the molded frame was cut and sanded away, and a Falcon vacuform canopy was used. The wing support struts were fashioned from styrene.
Paint is Vallejo Model Air, topped with Mr Hobby aqueous semi gloss. Chipping was done with Vallejo Metal Color aluminum, applied with a sponge on the forward facing areas, and a stiff fan brush on the wing roots. The exhaust staining was done with “engine soot” topped with Flory wash “light” shot through an airbrush.
The kit decals were used, accented with some aftermarket stencils.
