Anyone built this one? Specifically, I need to find out if it’s an M-35 or an M-34 deuce… I’m wanting an M35A2, but I can’t tell from the picture on the box if it’s got duals or single tires on the rear end…
OR… Does anyone know if a kitbash of the bed and rear end of the Italeri WW2 Deuce and the cab & frame of Monogram M-34 is feasible to make an M-35A2? I know the M-34 grill is different than the M35, but that’s the easy part to fix…
It is a poorly detailed M34. It would be very difficult to make it an M35A2. The Italeri CCKW bed would not work, it is a totally different bed than an M35A2. The wheels and tires are wrong for an M35 on the back too. The Revell M34 (correctly) has single rear wheels. Best bet is to keep looking for the AFV Club M35A2. They were totally different trucks, only the cab and frame (sort of) were the same. The Revell one is pretty much w/o details though.
The AFC Club M49A2C Fueler has a different bed. The tank is integrated into it and it has shorter sides than a standard M35 bed. The rest of the model is the same though.
If you can get the M35A1 “Nancy” Guntruck kit, it has all the M35A2 parts included as well. There are a bunch of them on eBay right now.
The AFV Club M35 and M49A2C kits are great. They are full of detail and look awesome when done.
Right now, all I can do is try to convert the Monogram M34 to an M35… Scratchbuilding the bed, grill, and canvas roof, plus finding another one for the other 4 tires & wheels needed for the M35… Hmmm… Now if I scratch an engine, raise the hood, drop a net in front of the truck, scratch the fuel tank, and hide the bed sides with rucks… Sure… No sweat…[:D]
Think I’ll wait until I find a kit… Been lookin’ on ebay for about an hour with no joy yet, but then, it’s early…
Kinda-sort -of. It is the same as the old Monogram Eager Beaver 2 1/2 ton Army Truck (M34), which was 1/35. It was also reboxed by Revell a few years ago as an M34 and a Willys MB as a set. The Jeep is also available in their MAS*H Swamp Tent Set. There was also an old Monogram M35 that was in 1/40 scale.

There was also an old Monogram M35 that was in 1/40 scale. It had 10 rubber wheels and came with some really emaciated figures. I can’t find a picture of it, but I think that is the one Rob is thinking of.
I’ve got the '66 Monogram Eager Beaver deuce in my stash… If I’m not mistaken, Monogram reboxed it in the '70s and Shep Paine used it for his Korean War dio, “Mail Call” with some of the Monogram Infantry figures converted into Marines…Those were supposed to be 1/32nd scale, if memory serves.
The M34 I got here, it’s pretty close to 1/35th, judging from tires, seats, and jerry cans…I haven’t measured it out to be sure. I used it a prime mover for my long-gone M101 dio about 20-30 years ago and it was a good match-up in scale… I sacrificed a second deuce to get enough tires and fudged the wheels… (Hid one side with the net and the other with the rifle rack, rucks, & cots under an ammo tarp lean-to…) 40-50 bucks for a truck is a little steep, considering I’d have to buy two of the AFV Club’s guntrucks… (I’d HAVE to have the gun truck as well as a prime mover, y’know…[;)]
I also remember a guntruck kitbash a guy did for Military Modeler magazine back in the '80s using the Monogram M-34 and the turret from a Tamiya M16… Looked pretty good as far as scale goes… Frankly, I think I could fudge a bit on the M35 conversion of the Monogram deuce… Looking at the bed, it wouldn’t be THAT hard to rebuild the sides to get rid of the wheel well cut outs, and that only leaves the grill.
I think that it’d be better to kitbash an AFV kit into a 5-ton for the 155mm Pig I gotta build yet… The 5-ton’s cab is the same as the M35A2…
Heck… Sound off, guys… This is turnin’ into a helluva brainstormin’ session… I get to model more or less full-time, ya know…[:D] I’m only limited by the number of TV trays I have to work on…
Sort of. It can be used as a base for a conversion. The hood on an M54 is longer, the fenders are wider, and the nose should be flat across (I missed that on mine at the time, oh well). Here is an article at Armorama on making the conversion using an Italeri M925 5-ton kit and the AFV Club M35A2.
No, there never was a 1/40 scale Monogram deuce. That kit was the original Revell kit. Revell did their armor in 1/40 scale and Monogram did theirs in both 1/35 and 1/32. Revell’s 1/40 deuce was issued in several variants. Revell also issued version of the truck with the Long John and Lacrosse missiles. The Revell kits had some decent figures, but when they took over Renwal’s molds, those figures looked like scarecrows.
You have to remember, there were three separate companies (Monogram, Revell and Revell of Germany); two of which have now combined (Revell-Monogram) and the third is the master reboxer (RoG).
I’ve had or have all of them, including the 3 MAS*H kits.
I haven’t heard of any issues with the Revell tires on their M34. Some other companies (Dragon and others) have had issues. If you leave bare rubber on bare plastic, they can react. I have had no issues as long as the plastic is painted to seal it and have a separation barrier between them.
