Revell 1/32 P-51D Smithsonian Edition

I know the molds with this kit are really old. But overall how is the kit?

Thanks

Scott

I think it has the best shape of any Mustang model in 1/32. It has nice interior detail as well. Drawbacks are the moving parts which detract from scale detail in the wheel wells and make a few holes to fill, and all the rivet detail which needs to go away. It is the same plastic as the motorized clear edition Monogram Phantom Mustang. In my opinion it is a very good start for a great P-51D, but aftermarket additions will be needed, and rework in some areas like the holes and rivets.

I recommend buying some books and scratchbuilding.Aftermarket will get it done quicker, but scratchbuilding will give you skills that are transferrable. The money ends up being more on the book side, but one aftermarket set can be used only once, and they aren’t all accurate.

The Smithsonian Edition P-51D in the black box is an old 70’s vintage Revell kit. The Revell Mustang that the gentleman above says has the best shape of any P-51D is actually a repop of the old Monogram Phantom Mustang. That kit is a decent shaped kit. The Revell P-51D in any boxing (I believe the Smithsonian series was the last issue of this kit from the 90’s) is terrible IMO. Just looks wrong to me. Even the box photo’s make it look bad.

I just got the Smithsonian edition of the Zero. Its an alright kit, detail is sub part to today’s standards, the pilot is crap. Instructions are horrible, and seams are pleantiful, but its a good kit, over all, for its age

Max:

Mea Culpa. I’ve seen the Monogram kit is Revell boxes. I’ve never had the original Revell kit, so I didn’t think of it and know nothing of it.

Only Revell kit of the Pony I knew of was the P-51B/ Mustang MkIII… There was a D?

I believe it was a Monogram kit. Remember the “Phantom Mustang”?

Yeah… Never built it, but I built Monogram’s F-51D a couple times… First 1/32 scale kit I ever built as a matter of fact… Thought the working gear and dropping bombs were great…

I’ve built the old Monogram Kits several times and the Phantom Mustang a few times. I have a 50th Aniversery Kit still sealed. Here are some pictures of my 1967 Mopnogram Phantom Mustang I built a few months ago.

Cheers

That the original decal set? Insignia should have the red bars on Air Force F-51s…

Nice catch. I missed that. Now I have something to do this weekend.

Thanks

While yer at it this weekend, how about writing up a little bit about those jackstands? Hammer want some…[8D]

Here’s my build of the Smithsonian P-51D. Detail is poor but shape is nice. Looks great hanging from the ceiling with the positionable gear up! When I was a kid this was the coolest kit.
