Revell 1/32 Hawker Sea Hurricane Mk IA "HurriCat"

Me too. I think the spinner is Sky. I’m not a fan of the concrete pad concept, dammit man she’s a seagull!

It wasn’t a proper catapult anygohow.

The term you are looking for is “vignette”

Dark shape against a light bagground.

Here’s a single completely uncorroborated (love that word) description that I believe to be true.

"Many battleships of the period were equipped with steam powered catapults to launch spotter planes.(Not the USN; it used a shell) It was proposed such catapults be put on the decks of merchant ships to launch a fighter aircraft. No existing catapult was powerful enough to launch a heavy fighter like a Hurricane, however a proposal was but forth to the research unit at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough. Within a week they developed a rocket sled to get the Hurricanes airborne. This was the only way to get a fully fuelled & armed Hurricane off the deck of a merchantmen in a very short space. The catapult was powered by a cluster of thirteen solid fuel rockets. It was the largest catapult at the time. "

God love ya but those stupid looking Plastistruc trusses that we all paw aside to get to the good stuff may be finally attributed to their source.

RATO, babe.

Ya, but a scale bow-section of the merchie would end up looking like what it is, a cropped bow-section of a really big boat with a little airplane mounted on it as an after-thought…

I did some quick measuring and calculating, and figured out that the bow would be about the width of my desk, and longer than my kitchen table… The prototype cat by itself is 70 feet long ya know… That means, if my math is right, the model cat will be just over five and a half feet long…

I’m thinking Erector set rather than Plastruct, lol…

Just edited the post- "vignette " is the word.

"oh, it’s just way too big’…

Wish I had a dime for every time… sure, Bill.

I really like floaters and as that…

got to go pour a little nip.

I see a plane that’s 32 feet long on a rack thats a good three times her length. So thats 100 feet, which at 1/32 is three feet at model railroad suppression scale. (nip)

A 1/32 ship is indeed a big old deal.

The term for a dark shape against a light background that I’m familiar with is "vignette’.

Wuz me wudda gone 1/72. But you aren’t me LOL.

Do it at 2.29 feet, No pisser FAA fans will catch it.

Hey I just found a great show on cable- storage wars on A+E.

We stayed up late last night and watched it together. There’s a group of four buyers that bid on storage units. The prize was a guy who got a ag full of flare pistols including one from the civil war.

Well, Bondo, you know me and 1/72 scale… Just not compatible… I mulled over doing the “Model Railroad suppression scale” thing too, as an ex-rail-head, it was almost mandatory I explore that option, but since the cat is a major part of the build, it’d be like cropping the bridge of an AVLB diorama…

Might be able to crop a few scale feet off the hiilside, but that’d be about it… Impossible to do that on the full-blown ship’s bow though… At least for me, and you KNOW I ain’t a rivet-counter…

I’ve been in contact with a genuine FAA Hurricat veteran, BTW… Stumbled across him in one of regular Warbird forums, and we’ve exchanged a few emails in the last few days, after I told him of my project… He’s rather excited about my build and is being quite helpful with some pictures he took back in the day… At age 92, though, he’s not real timely with replies, but he DID build a 1/72 scale diorama of his ship with his Hurricane on the cat… I’ll post a couple pics he sent me of it when PhotoBucket starts working for me again…

Only thing that disappoints me about his help is that I thought I was doing something no one else has done, lol…

Here ya go…

Hope I’m that good at 92…

But, as you can see, the ship is a supporting factor in the diorama, it that makes for rather a bad way to display the aircraft, because of the size problem… The ship over-powers the Huricane, and that’s why I’m inclined towards the hilltop diorama… I want the Hurricane to be the focal point…

Further progress on post-shading, and she’s ready for Final Assembly… I added stretched sprue brake-lines and metal foil clamps, along with salimi-sliced sprue for the landing lights (somewhat redundant for an aircraft very likely to have a 1:0 take-off/landing ratio…)

Anyway, she’s about ready for her cat… Waiting on Plastruct to send my materials for that…

Looks great Hammer, you got to love the Hurricane since she seems like the ugly step-sister of the Spit. I am looking to build one to pair up w/my Spit MK II. I really like the weathering you did. [t$t]

Thanks, R… The weathering so far is just post-shading with powdered artist’s charcoal and a “0” brush but she’s gotta get some “saltiness” to her yet… A ittle pastel-color in the centers of the panels perhaps…

Another thought: Display the AC on a small section of cat rail and have a photo of a north Atlantic scene behind it showing one of the ships with the AC mounted. Do it up as a small forced perspective vignette.

Pat.

i like that plane Hans its the first ive seen of your creations[Y][:)][t$t][:D[[Y]

Hans, as you know these Sea Hurricanes were one shot missions. If it’s not on the catapult, and it’s not in the air, then the only place left it can be is in the drink…[:O]

well im getting a model focke wulf condor just like the one in the vid
